Opportunity Summary 

OCIT:
The mission of Orange County Information Technology (OCIT) is to provide innovative, reliable, and secure technology solutions that support County departments in delivering quality public services. OCIT provides IT solutions across County departments for voice communications, network services, application support, service desk, desktop support, as well as data center services. The Intern will assist staff in the day-to day activities within the Cybersecurity unit. Interns will work during regular business hours in the OCIT office, approximately 20 hours per week for a period of 6 months to 1 year, depending on school schedule and workload.

Note: this is not a remote internship

Tasks:

Document and inventory legal hold items such as hard drives, laptops, tablets, phones, etc. in the evidence room.
Scan and upload chain of custody forms and legal hold memos, attaching them to corresponding cases in the eDiscovery case management system and network shares.
Research and develop process and procedures for equipment check in/out.
Collaborate with County Counsel and other agencies to maintain legal holds in the eDiscovery case management system.
Monthly review of County Counsel's legal hold list to identify data custodians associated to each case. Update and review the SharePoint site where agencies share their legal hold lists, ensuring alignment with legal holds in Exterro.
Provide on-going legal hold maintenance across all County departments.
Develop, review, update, and maintain eDiscovery documentation.
Generate reports from the eDiscovery case management system as needed.
Administration of eDiscovery case management system support (Create accounts, remove accounts, and edit permissions)
Submit tickets for eDiscovery requests and perform periodic follow up of ticket status to requesters and management.
Collaborate and communicate with IT teams across multiple agencies to review the active legal hold cases.
Provide technical support for eDiscovery case management systems to County staff.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Training:

Intern will job shadow and receive one-on-one training.
The student will receive one-on-one training from staff to ensure they understand assigned tasks and the eDiscovery platform. They will also be provided with written documentation and process guides. To reinforce their understanding and assess their progress, the intern will be asked to create procedural documentation, which will help evaluate their ability to apply and communicate what they’ve learned.

Learning Outcome:

1. Gain experience with the full eDiscovery lifecycle, including identification, collection, preservation, processing, and review of digital evidence using eDiscovery case management tools.
2. Gain experience on how to support digital investigations by using eDiscovery tools to manage case data, assist with evidence review, and identify relevant information that supports investigations.
3. Gain insight into how digital evidence is analyzed and used to assist litigations and investigations.
4. Learn how to administer and support an eDiscovery software platform by managing user accounts, assign permissions, submit and track cases.
