Family Strengthening InternAt — Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast

Opportunity Summary 

Internship Overview:

Under the guidance of the Director of Family Strengthening, the Family Strengthening Intern will assist in delivering high-quality programs and services aimed at empowering families and enhancing the overall well-being of community members. This hands-on internship offers students an opportunity to engage directly with families, community partners, and service providers across Orange County. Interns will also have opportunities for networking, outreach, event coordination, and professional development. The internship will culminate in a student-led final project aligned with their interests and goals.

Intern Responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing new programs and initiatives designed to strengthen families.

  • Support data collection, entry, analysis, and reporting efforts to evaluate program effectiveness.

  • Build and maintain relationships with families and community-based organizations.

  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure access to quality, relevant resources and services.

  • Participate in and support community events, neighborhood meetings, parent groups, and awareness campaigns that align with the organization’s mission.

  • Conduct outreach to promote programs, services, and events through the club, local schools, and broader community.

  • Provide administrative and clerical support as needed.

  • Attend and participate in professional development trainings, roundtable meetings, and social work-focused workshops.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Family Strengthening.

Training & Supervision:

To ensure a meaningful learning experience, interns will receive:

  • New intern onboarding and orientation

  • Biweekly one-on-one mentoring meetings

  • Participation in team connection circles

  • Job shadowing opportunities with department staff

  • Training on food distribution and food rescue operations

  • Clear guidance and supervision on assigned projects and responsibilities

  • Invitations to attend professional development opportunities relevant to human services and social work

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of community demographics and available local resources, and appropriately refer families to those services.

  2. Build professional networks with local organizations and gain a deeper understanding of agency collaboration in Orange County.

  3. Understand internal operations, including interdepartmental functions, policies, and procedures of a nonprofit human services organization.

  4. Gain practical insight into the fields of social work and human services through direct service, trainings, and hands-on experiences.

This internship is ideal for students studying social work, human services, psychology, Child & Adolescent Studies, nonprofit management, public health, or related fields who are passionate about strengthening families and uplifting communities through direct engagement and advocacy.
