Opportunity Summary 

Under general supervision, team with behavioral health professionals in planning and providing behavioral health services in schools; provide general counseling, case management, community outreach, and prevention services; and to do other work as required.

Incumbents in this class, team with school professionals in the provision of student treatment and prevention services, to directly assist students in the utilization of appropriate school and community resources, and to provide education and information to the school. Incumbents in this class provide strength based behavioral and therapeutic support, encouragement, advocacy, and related services to assist student in remaining in the least restrictive environment.

Example of Job Duties:

  • Interview students to team with school professionals in determining the needs of individuals or groups; responds to emergency telephone calls; describes basic services to students, schools and families; discusses goals and objectives of proposed treatment plans and establishes contract with student; assists student in recognizing and solving conditions in the student's environment which may contribute to mental health problems; as part of a team, counsels individual students and groups to develop social adjustment skills and to increase student resolution of identified problems.
  • Visit students, individually or as part of a team, in a variety of living situations to help assess the mental health needs of individuals and families; visits students to observe progress, provide counseling, gather data, and to report significant changes in the student's condition to designated professional staff.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources and/or makes appointment with behavioral health professional(s) for diagnosis and evaluation; assists the student, family, and other concerned individuals in filing for and obtaining various kinds of assistance such as financial, housing, or legal; monitors student services to ensure that a continuum of services is available.
  • Gather data from student/family interviews, past records, other information, to gain understanding and verification of previous disorders and treatment episodes; refers student to physicians for medication, observation, and treatment; advocates for the student; consults with other individuals and groups regarding services available within the community and specific needs of particular students.
  • Act as a liaison between the school and other agencies, departments, organizations, and community groups.
  • Schedule or assist in the scheduling of needed transportation for student services; maintains records and writes reports and summaries for student records or other documentation including care status, care reviews, case management plans, summaries, and reports; prepares correspondence and special reports as necessary; attends in-service workshops and training.
  • Inform, train, supports and empowers students and families/caregivers who directly or indirectly receive mental health services.
  • Communicates, represents and promotes the student and families/caregivers' perspective within the school system.
  • Attend and participate in special events, conferences, workshops and trainings within the mental health system and in the community.
  • Develop activities, programs and resources which support students and family/caregivers in achieving their goals.
  • Support the appropriate recognition, acceptance and understanding of social and cultural factors in the provision of mental health services.
  • Develop effective working relationships with agencies and organizations to advocate for student and family/caregiver empowerment.
  • Help prepare and support students and families/caregivers at case staffings, IEPs, TDMs, FTMs and at a variety of formal and informal hearings.
  • Help students and those who support them to articulate their needs.
  • Focuses on and is sensitive to student and family/caregiver satisfaction with the services received and general satisfaction with mental health services.
  • Assist and promote students and those who support them in support networks and activities.

Training:

General employer orientation (mandatory), weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings, job shadowing, workshops/skills training, Behavior intervention training, social-emotional learning, crisis prevention intervention training

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the public education school system including MTSS tiered supports and Special Education services and system.
  2. Be comfortable and effective in providing behavioral supports to students via their IEP services.
  3. Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of teachers, administrators, parents, and mental health providers.
