Position Description

Position Title: Broadcast & Podcast Production Internship

Division: KLBP-FM/Long Beach

Department: Programming

Reports To: KLBP General Manager

Compensation: Non-paid Volunteer

Duration: One Semester

GENERAL STATEMENT 

Under the supervision of the Long Beach Public Media General Manager, the intern will assist with the production of a podcast series in current series production. Along with audio editing duties, interns are given the opportunity to learn other aspects of related aspects of radio station management such as programming, promotions, underwriting and marketing. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following...

  1. Under the direction of the General Manager/Podcast Producer, assist in the production of a bi-weekly series currently on air, including sourcing material, scheduling interviews and topics for discussion.
  2. Assist in the selection of music and in pre-production tasks.
  3. Attend and assist with the recording of episodes.
  4. Actively participate on the KLBP station management team, to include staff meetings, and trainings.
  5. Participate in the planning and development of 6 1-hour episodes, shadow current production staff.
  6. Maintain regular hours posted, 120 hours per semester required.
  7. Have a working knowledge of audio recording, editing software.
  8. Complete all internship assessments and training as assigned.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.  

Training:

We offer instruction in audio editing in Adobe Audition. Interns will shadow existing producers in day-to-day production and will be assigned tasks when they are assigned to a show. We will provide one-on-one instruction/ training in addition if needed. Interns will meet once a week with supervisor for ongoing feedback.

Learning Outcomes:

Along with audio editing duties, interns are given the opportunity to learn other related aspects of radio station management such as programming, promotions, underwriting and marketing. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience 

Current enrollment in college or university with 6 units and above 2.5 GPA. Open to all majors, Communication Arts, Electronic Arts or Journalism preferred.  120 hours per semester is required.  Academic credit is available.

Knowledge and Abilities

Successful candidates will possess knowledge of audio production, as well as the ability to connect well with others. Must be willing to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse group of staff and volunteers. Exceptional organizational and communication skills, dependability and punctuality are a must. Must possess enhanced leadership skills and be able to work in a diverse environment.  

Other Qualifications

This applicant must be available to work evenings and weekends during the academic year. Ability to interpret and carry out assigned tasks in a timely manner. Volunteers must have strong collaborative skills, be adaptable to last-minute changes and have the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and personalities.

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is occasionally required to sit at a desk or computer workstation and use hands and fingers to key data, sort documents, and file paperwork. The volunteer is frequently required to stand and be able to talk or hear in interactions with others. The volunteer is occasionally required to walk to other offices within the building and around the campus. The volunteer must be able to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
