Community Health Internship Opportunity

Cal State Fullerton – Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (CHN)
Preferred: Bilingual Spanish/English Speaking Students

The CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (CHN) is a community-based initiative dedicated to reducing educational and health disparities in underserved communities across Orange County. We are currently seeking passionate and motivated student interns to join our team as Community Health Student Interns.

This internship is ideal for students interested in community work, mental health, public health, social services, or education. Interns will gain hands-on experience working with primarily monolingual Spanish-speaking populations and learn how to support families through culturally appropriate, community-based programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate weekly psychoeducational groups that promote mental health and wellness
  • Plan and implement engaging, community-based activities and workshops
  • Assist clients in navigating resources and provide follow-up support
  • Help clients complete forms and support intake processes
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with data entry
  • Contribute to program planning and service delivery
  • Participate in occasional outreach efforts and community events

Other Task Areas:

  • Mental Health Prevention
    • Research and identify evidence-based mental health prevention programs
    • Support implementation of appropriate strategies tailored to the community

  • Client Outreach & Engagement
    • Conduct outreach efforts to engage community members in available programs and services
    • Participate in community events and assist in promoting program participation

  • Case Management
    • Assist with client intake and complete basic documentation
    • Write case notes and help connect clients with relevant resources and referrals

  • Program Enrollment Support
    • Support participants in completing required forms
    • Assist with follow-up to encourage ongoing program engagement

  • Psycho-Educational Classes
    • Help develop and facilitate weekly group sessions focused on mental wellness
    • Prepare materials and support group logistics as needed

  • Collaboration with Consultants
    • Coordinate with wellness professionals (e.g., yoga instructors) to support class offerings
    • Assist in setting up, promoting, or supporting these sessions

  • Supervision
    • Attend regular supervision meetings with a clinical supervisor
    • Participate in case discussions and take direction on tasks and responsibilities

  • Program Support
    • Assist with data entry, scheduling, outreach calls, and general program coordination
    • Support event planning and community-based activities related to wellness and education

Training Provided

Training & Support
Full training in program delivery, community needs, and resource navigation and referral will be provided by staff and consultants. Interns will receive hands-on guidance and ongoing support to help them succeed in their role. This includes collaboration with experienced team members, regular supervision, and opportunities to build confidence while working directly with the community.

Interns will receive full, hands-on training from CHN staff and consultants in:

  • Program development and facilitation
  • Community needs assessment
  • Resource navigation and referral practices
  • Serving underserved and vulnerable populations

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, students will:

  • Gain real-world experience in community mental health programming
  • Develop group facilitation, public speaking, and leadership skills
  • Strengthen problem-solving and interpersonal communication abilities
  • Improve cultural awareness and cross-cultural engagement skills
  • Learn how to evaluate and respond to community-specific needs
  • Collaborate with professionals in a team-oriented, community-based setting

Schedule

Interns must be available two days per week, between Monday and Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM, on-site at the Center for Healthy Neighborhoods.
