Video Production InternAt — City of Jurupa Valley, Councilmember District 1

Opportunity Summary 

This internship offers hands-on experience in video production, focusing on documenting and promoting community engagement events, city initiatives, and local storytelling efforts. Interns will gain real-world skills in filming, editing, and producing content that uplifts civic participation and highlights the voices of Jurupa Valley residents.

Tasks:

  • Video Production & Editing: Capture and edit video footage of community events, public meetings, and interviews using professional software and storytelling techniques.
  • Field Reporting: Attend and document city and community events, learning how to identify key moments, conduct on-site interviews, and gather visual content that reflects local issues and resident voices.
  • Policy Communication: Work closely with the Councilmember’s team to understand local policy issues, and assist in translating complex topics into accessible, engaging content for the general public.
  • Story Development: Learn how to capture compelling soundbites, develop narratives, and structure video pieces that inform, inspire, and uplift civic participation.
  • Community Engagement: Interview residents, business owners, and community leaders to highlight their perspectives and experiences, and build trust-based relationships while on assignment.
  • Content Strategy: Assist in planning content that aligns with civic goals and communications objectives, contributing to increased public awareness and community involvement.

Training:

  • To support student learning and professional growth, the internship includes a structured training process designed to align with the stated learning outcomes:
  • General Orientation (Mandatory): Interns will receive an initial orientation that provides an overview of the City of Jurupa Valley, the Office of Councilmember Armando Carmona, and the expectations and responsibilities associated with the internship.
  • Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings: Interns will meet regularly with Councilmember Carmona or a designated mentor for feedback, reflection, and guidance on project goals, professional development, and civic learning.
  • Job Shadowing & Hands-On Projects: Interns will shadow staff at public events, community forums, and council-related initiatives to observe and engage in the planning and execution of civic media projects.
  • Media Skills Workshops: Periodic training sessions will cover key skills in video production, content strategy, and ethical storytelling.
  • Work Sample Reviews & Task Contextualization: Interns will receive clear overviews of each assignment along with examples of past work to inform quality expectations and purpose within broader city initiatives.
  • Ongoing Reflection and Evaluation: Interns will participate in check-ins and final reflection exercises to assess learning progress and discuss areas for improvement or further exploration.

Learning Outcome:

  • Develop practical skills in video production — including filming, editing, and storytelling for public and civic content.
  • Understand the role of media in local government and how visual communication supports community engagement and transparency.
  • Collaborate with city officials and community members to produce meaningful content that reflects the voices, needs, and stories of local residents.
