ReConnect EISOA Program InternAt — Council on Aging-Orange County
Minimum 60 hours of volunteer commitment.
The Council on Aging-Southern California is a private, nonprofit corporation, serving older adults in Orange County since 1973. The Council mission is to promote the independence, health, and dignity of older adults through compassion, education, and advocacy.
The intern will organize, schedule, and conduct weekly activities with assigned client/s in compliance with the activities plan developed by the case manager. Promote the ReConnect program within the local community in public and private events, health fairs, volunteer recruitment exhibitions, and trainings. Disseminate printed information about the program and available support groups among entities frequently visited by seniors or isolated adults such as libraries, senior and community centers, and post offices. Assist with the department linkages and evaluation database management to support grant's outcomes. Document participant's activities and visits and conduct telephone assistance to monitor clients.
The intern will report to and be supervised by the ReConnect Staff and receive a certificate upon completion.
The ReConnect Program is a countrywide prevention program that benefits adults 60+ who are isolated and may be displaying symptoms of depression or other mental health issues. The goal is to help individuals sustain emotional well-being through consistent exposure to reinforced health life patterns, education, and support groups.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Internet research
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Self-motivated and self–starter
Sensitivity toward older adults and persons with disabilities
Have access to transportation and a telephone
Complete training and attend in-service meetings
Be fingerprinted through the Department of Justice (free of charges)

Tasks:

Training:
Interns will receive:
1. Agency Overview training covering site-specific policies and procedures, including appropriate client interaction
2. Monthly Report training covering report specific documentation.
3. Outreach training covering networking opportunities.
4. Preceptorship - Shadowing case managers and/or other subject matter experts
5. Immediate and written feedback regarding intern conduct and overall performance
Students will be communicating with supervisors via email/phone/text. Weekly supervision will be to support the student.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the internship, students will:
1. Understand special needs and interests of aging populations in Orange County
2. Identify appropriate resources for client distribution specific to individual needs
3. Prepare individualized client-based resources
