Optometric InternshipAt — Alex Corbin Liu, OD Inc

Opportunity Summary

The Optometry Intern will work with the optometrist and clinic staff to support both patient care and office operations. Daily tasks include welcoming patients, helping them get settled for their exams, and taking basic medical and vision histories. Interns will assist with screenings like visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and eye pressure checks, and gradually learn to operate diagnostic equipment under supervision. They may help update patient records, schedule or confirm appointments, and assist with insurance or billing when needed. In the optical area, the intern could guide patients in selecting frames, explain lens options, and demonstrate proper care for glasses or contacts like showing the correct way to insert and remove lenses. Some days may involve restocking supplies, cleaning equipment, or setting up exam rooms for the next patient. This role offers hands-on experience in both clinical and administrative aspects of a busy optometry office.

Tasks:

The intern will welcome patients, take medical and vision histories, and explain what to expect during exams. They will assist with screenings such as visual acuity, depth perception, color vision, and eye pressure, and use equipment like autorefractors and retinal cameras. They will help document results, support the doctor during exams, and answer patient questions about glasses, contacts, or lens options. Administrative duties include confirming appointments, helping with insurance verification, and assisting with billing. The intern will also help keep the clinic organized by restocking supplies, cleaning equipment, and preparing exam rooms. Occasionally, they might assist with small projects like labeling lens samples or organizing brochures, giving them a better understanding of how a busy office runs.

Training:

The internship begins with a short orientation covering office procedures, HIPAA guidelines, and safety protocols. The student will spend the first few days observing staff during patient intake and testing, then gradually take on tasks with supervision. Feedback is given informally throughout the day, and weekly check-ins allow the intern to ask questions and review progress. After patient visits, quick debriefs highlight what went well and what could be improved. As the student gains experience and confidence, they will take on more responsibility, always with guidance from the optometrist and staff.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will feel confident assisting with basic eye screenings and pre-testing procedures, as well as operating commonly used optometric equipment. They will know how to document patient information accurately while maintaining confidentiality. The student will develop communication skills for interacting with patients, explaining simple eye health tips, and helping with frame or lens selection. They will also become familiar with appointment scheduling, insurance processes, clinic workflow, and proper cleaning and maintenance of diagnostic instruments.
