Opportunity Summary 

We are looking for a caring and reliable First Grade Teacher Assistant to support the classroom teacher in providing a positive and engaging learning environment. The assistant will help with classroom activities, small group instruction, preparing materials, supervising students, and supporting individual student needs. Additional responsibilities include assisting with classroom management, monitoring students during transitions or recess, and helping maintain a safe and organized classroom. The ideal candidate enjoys working with children, is patient, and is eager to support both students and the lead teacher.

Tasks:

Assist the lead teacher in planning and preparing classroom activities and instructional materials.
Support the delivery of lessons by working with small groups or individual students to reinforce academic skills in reading, writing, and math.
Observe and apply classroom management strategies to help maintain a positive and structured learning environment.
Monitor and document student progress through informal assessments and observations, sharing findings with the lead teacher.
Collaborate with the classroom teacher during weekly check-ins to reflect on teaching practices and receive feedback.
Participate in classroom organization, including preparing Montessori or other instructional materials, setting up learning centers, and maintaining an orderly environment.
Engage in professional reflection by keeping notes or journals on daily experiences, connecting classroom practices to developmental theory and best practices in education.

Training:

Students will receive an initial general orientation to the school, classroom procedures, and expectations. They will participate in weekly one-on-one mentor meetings with the lead teacher to discuss progress, goals, and strategies for supporting student learning. Training will also include job shadowing the classroom teacher to observe instructional methods, classroom management, and student engagement techniques. The student will gradually take on responsibilities with guidance, supported by an overview and contextualization of assigned tasks. Additional training will be provided through hands-on experience with lesson materials, opportunities to assist in small group instruction, and reflective discussions to connect practice with educational theory.

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to reflect on professional growth and apply feedback to improve teaching practices.
