Opportunity Summary 

Description – The 26-acre Arboretum & Botanical Garden at CSUF offers students and visitors the opportunity for scholarly work and community enjoyment. For CSUF students seeking academic credit and relevant experience in their field of study, the Arboretum offers the Engaging Environmental Experiences (E3) internship program.

Students participating in the Art & Graphic Design E3 internship team will be assigned to provide artistic work (consisting of artwork for flyers, social media posts, stickers, buttons and other collateral material) in support of community programs put on by the various E3 intern teams. Art & Graphic Design E3 interns will also work with Arboretum staff to create artwork in support of K-6 field trips, interpretive signage in the garden, special events, and member events.

 Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with assigned E3 team(s) to create original artwork for events, flyers, social media posts, etc.
  • Create original artwork that meets the needs of Arboretum staff and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other E3 teams to design artistic elements for interpretive signage that aligns with botanic information provided by the other teams
  • Create art-based educational content
  • Attend weekly team meetings for the Art & Graphic Design team; attend assigned E3 team(s)’s weekly meetings
  • Create a poster or presentation at the end of the semester
  • Optional: 1-2 hours of horticultural activity per week

Availability – This program is open to as many as 6 student interns in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. This internship is only available to students with an Art major and with emphases in Illustration, Graphic Design & Interactive Design, Drawing & Painting, and Photography & Experimental Media.

Time Commitment – Interns will be expected to work at least 8 hours per week for a total of 120 hours per semester. Time will consist of weekly team meetings and creation of artwork (with optional horticultural activities).

  • Gain experience in developing artwork for a client, receiving feedback, and revising work based on client feedback
  • Teamwork, team building, team management and leadership skills
  • Project planning, time management coordination, and implementation
  • Environmental education with emphasis on interpretive signage
  • Develop cross-disciplinary skills and work with students from other majors
  • Building relationships with campus community members and a stronger connection to campus
  • Experience in recruitment and interview process
  • Develop soft skills that are applicable in the workplace

Application Process – Register with the Center for Internships and Community Engagement. Provide the Arboretum with a resume, cover letter, and a portfolio of your work. Interns are responsible for arranging course credit with their advisor.

Training:

1. General Intern Training
2. Intern will be given tasks to complete and will provide weekly progress reports to staff for feedback.
3. Intern will be expected to meet deadlines outlined by staff.
4. Ideas for developing interpretive content and anticipated audience will be discussed with intern.
