Production Assistant Director InternAt — South Coast Repertory

Opportunity Summary 

SCR's Assistant Director supports the Director through the rehearsal process of a production. This role provides assistance for note taking, communicating between the director and stage management, and helping actors learn their lines, blocking, and choreography based on the Director's instructions. 

Tasks:

1. Participate and attend rehearsals and production meetings as mutually agreed upon by Director, Stage Manager, and Assistant Director.
2. Support day-to-day rehearsal needs and operations, including but not limited to:
-Take notes for Director during rehearsals, run throughs, and previews.
-Provide support for running of additional rehearsal spaces as requested by the Director.
-Communicate notes from Director to the Stage Management team.
-Assist actors with running lines and practicing blocking/choreography.

Training:

The student will be working directly with the production's director, Sara Guerrero, who as a CSUF faculty member, will lead him through the process and provide feedback and answer questions in real time.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this academic internship, the student will have observed and supported the directing of a professional theatre production. The student will be able to more confidently navigate:
1. Communication practices between directors, stage management, and a theatre's production team.
2. Planning and scheduling a rehearsal day to ensure a production is on-time and Opens effectively.
3. Making decisive directing decisions in collaboration with a music director, choreographer, design team, and stage manager.
4. Anticipate how to work within a professional theatre environment.
