Opportunity Summary 

Education Assistant provides supportive services for College Education Services to individuals with developmental disabilities using the person centered planning approach. Includes: In class intervention tutorials, out of class tutorials, subject matter review and supports, Personal Care Services as needed.

Tasks:

To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, training will include weekly check-in meetings to review assigned students, discuss in-class and out-of-class support strategies, and provide feedback on documentation and professional skills. The intern will attend monthly staff meetings that include policies and procedures review and focused learning topics such as curriculum building, person-centered planning, promoting student independence, and campus and community resources. The intern will also participate in shadowing the Program Coordinator and Program Manager during meetings with Regional Center staff, parents, and students to support the development and review of individualized support plans.

Training:

The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by providing individualized, person-centered support to three assigned college students with intellectual or developmental disabilities, including in-class and out-of-class support. The intern will provide general tutoring, academic skill-building, organization support, and instructional assistance aligned with each student’s course requirements and learning needs. The intern will complete daily case notes documenting academic progress, behaviors, communication skills, and support strategies, and will use this data to prepare semi-annual and annual progress reports. The intern will attend counseling and support appointments with students to promote self-advocacy and communication skills, and will coordinate with Cerritos College service providers and campus departments to connect students to mental health, independent living, advocacy, case management, and financial resources.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to create a person-centered support plan, including scheduling, creating curricula, and adjusting accommodations based on their students' needs.
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to assess incoming students at their current academic, social, and communication levels.
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to apply special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to confer with parents, program administrators, college staff, regional center staf and/or other professionals to develop individual support plans for students' educational, physical, and social development.
