Before and Afterschool Extended Care AideAt — San Jose Charter Academy
ELOP Extended Care Aide will help supervise and engage students in grades Tk-8 during before and after school hours. They will be responsible to take attendance, support with academics and behavior.
Tasks:
Student Behavior Management:
Create and maintain a positive, safe environment.
Implement behavior strategies and interventions effectively.
Instructional Support:
Collaborate with lead teachers to guide and assist in classroom activities.
Prepare materials and facilitate engaging, interactive lessons.
Homework and SEL Assistance:
Help students with homework assignments and reinforce learning.
Support social and emotional learning through activities that build self-awareness, empathy, and communication skills.
Training:
Orientation & Program Policies -Admin- Program schedule, daily routines, safety procedures, confidentiality, and reporting.
Classroom Management - Admin-Setting expectations, positive reinforcement, routines, and de-escalation techniques.
Behavior Intervention- BCBA- Tiered supports, redirecting strategies, documenting incidents, and consistent consequence implementation.
Social\u2011Emotional Learning (SEL) -Counseling Team- Facilitating SEL activities, promoting self\u2011regulation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
Homework & Academic Support -Admin- Small\u2011group and one\u2011to\u2011one tutoring strategies, scaffolding, questioning techniques, and promoting independent work habits.
Differentiation & Inclusive Practices - Admin- Adapting activities for varied learning needs, supporting IEP/accommodation plans, and co\u2011teaching basics.
Safety, Health & Emergency Response - School Nurse- First Aid, CPR, medication protocols, supervision best practices, and emergency evacuation procedures.
Child Development Basics- Admin- Age\u2011appropriate behaviors, milestones, and developmentally appropriate practice for elementary ages.
Communication & Family Engagement- Counseling Team-Positive communication with students, families, and staff; confidentiality and documentation.
Mandated Reporting & Child Protection - Human Resources- Recognizing signs of abuse/neglect, reporting procedures, and legal obligations.
Technology & Program Tools- Tech Director - Use of attendance systems, behavior logs, learning platforms, and any program\u2011specific software.
Learning Outcome:
Extended Care aides in the elementary setting play a key role in both academic and social-emotional development. The position involves supporting classroom instruction, managing student behavior, and assisting with homework and SEL initiatives.
By the end of the internship, students will be able to apply different strategies to manage behavior, successfully communicate with parents and work collaboratively with others in a team setting.
