Opportunity Summary 

A Parent Educator is a professional who helps parents and caregivers gain the knowledge and skills necessary to support their children's educational and developmental needs.

Tasks:

Observe and co-facilitate evidence-based parenting classes, progressively increasing responsibility for session planning, delivery, and group management.

Prepare lesson plans and session materials in alignment with approved evidence-based parenting curricula while maintaining fidelity to program models.

Conduct parent engagement activities, including welcoming participants, facilitating discussions, modeling positive communication skills, and responding to questions in a supportive and culturally responsive manner.

Apply trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches when interacting with families and caregivers in individual and group settings.

Participated in job shadowing and supervised practice with experienced parent educators and program facilitators.

Complete intakes, attendance tracking, and basic program documentation in accordance with agency policies and confidentiality standards.

Training:

Students placed at this site will receive comprehensive training designed to support the achievement of internship learning outcomes. Training will begin with a mandatory general employer orientation, which includes an overview of the organization’s mission, policies, ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, mandated reporting obligations, and expectations for professional conduct.

Students will participate in weekly scheduled one-on-one meetings with a designated mentor/supervisor to review learning objectives, discuss parent education activities, receive feedback, and engage in reflective practice. Job shadowing opportunities will allow students to observe experienced facilitators delivering evidence-based parenting classes in both individual and group formats.

Students will receive direct instruction on the implementation of evidence-based parenting curricula, including program structure, session planning, facilitation skills, fidelity to the model, participant engagement strategies, and outcome monitoring. Training will also include guidance on adapting evidence-based content to meet the cultural, developmental, and contextual needs of families while maintaining program integrity.

Students will receive structured training on working within faith-based and religious communities, including cultural humility, ethical integration of spirituality, collaboration with faith leaders, and maintaining professional boundaries. Workshops, skills-based training, and review of manuals, curricula, and training literature will support skill development. Assigned tasks will be clearly overviewed and contextualized, and students may complete reflective exercises or competency assessments to evaluate learning and implementation readiness.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate effective parent education skills by delivering developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive parenting education to individuals and groups.

Apply evidence-based parenting frameworks to support caregivers in strengthening attachment, communication, and positive discipline strategies.

Assess family needs and strengths using observation, intake tools, and caregiver feedback to tailor parent education interventions.

Facilitate parent engagement and empowerment by modeling reflective listening, psychoeducation, and collaborative problem-solving techniques.

Maintain ethical and professional practice by adhering to confidentiality standards, mandated reporting requirements, and appropriate boundaries when working with families.
