Tiered Support Interventionist (Intern)At — St. Joseph Catholic School - La Puente
The Tiered Support Interventionist (Intern) works collaboratively with classroom teachers to support students through targeted small-group and individual interventions. This role reinforces core academic skills, promotes positive learning behaviors, and helps students build confidence and independence. With an understanding of child development and basic psychology, the intern also supports students’ social-emotional needs and assists with individual check-ins or counseling supports as guided by the school counselor and STEP coordinator. Guided by a whole-child approach, the intern helps implement tiered supports, monitor student progress, and foster a safe, nurturing environment where all learners can grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Tasks:
Students serving as Tiered Support Interventionist (Interns) will engage in professional and pre-professional duties that directly support instructional and student-support outcomes. The majority of responsibilities are substantive, skill-based, and aligned with college-level learning expectations. Duties include:
Implementing tiered academic interventions through small-group and one-on-one support in collaboration with classroom teachers
Assisting in the planning and delivery of targeted instruction aligned with student learning goals and intervention plans
Supporting social-emotional and behavioral interventions, including structured student check-ins, as guided by the school counselor and STEP coordinator
Applying principles of child development and educational psychology to inform instructional and behavioral support strategies
Grading student work, reviewing assignments, and assisting teachers with academic feedback to inform instructional decisions
Conducting progress monitoring, collecting data, and tracking student growth over time using teacher-provided tools and rubrics
Maintaining organized records and documentation related to intervention outcomes while adhering to confidentiality and ethical standards
Participating in professional collaboration through meetings, reflective discussions, and mentor check-ins with teachers and support staff
Observing and reflecting on instructional practices, intervention strategies, and student responses to support continuous improvement
Training:
Students placed as Tiered Support Interventionist (Interns) will receive structured, hands-on training designed to support both professional growth and successful learning outcomes. Training begins with a mandatory general school orientation, which includes an overview of school policies, expectations, confidentiality, and professional conduct. Prior to working with students, interns must successfully clear a background check, fingerprinting requirements, and complete required diocesan compliance procedures, including Virtus training, primarily the Protecting God’s Children program. This training prepares interns to recognize signs of abuse, understand common perpetrator behaviors, and follow established safety, screening, and reporting protocols to protect children.
Throughout the placement, interns will participate in job shadowing with classroom teachers, the Tiered Support team, and the school counselor/STEP coordinator to gain contextual understanding of student needs and intervention models. Interns will receive clear task orientation and modeling before implementing any academic or social-emotional supports.
Ongoing training includes weekly one-on-one mentor check-ins with the supervising teacher or coordinator to reflect on experiences, review progress, and set goals. Interns will also receive guided exposure to intervention materials, work samples, and progress-monitoring tools, along with informal workshops or coaching focused on child development, learning psychology, behavior supports, and tiered intervention strategies. Continuous feedback and reflection are embedded throughout the experience to ensure meaningful, ethical, and effective practice.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
