Environmental Justice InternAt — Orange County Environmental Justice
OCEJ is seeking to work with an Environmental Justice Intern to support our Communities Organizing for Better Water (COBW) campaign. This intern will learn how to implement OCEJ’s community science model, the current water governance structures in OC, and learn how to collect, interpret, and communicate water contamination results. The intern will also be working directly with our Water Justice Director, Jocelyn Sanchez, and will ideally have an interest in public health or a similar field. This position will be hybrid with occasional in-person events in Santa Ana.
Tasks:
The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by…
- Supporting with planning and executing com- munity science meetings regarding local contamination issues in Orange County
- Developing and/or providing feedback for educational reference materials for documenting water contamination
- Conduct research of local water governance structures (e.g., attending local water government meetings)
- Engaging in outreach with community members about local water contamination issues and advocacy
Training:
- Orientation to provide an overview of the organization’s history, values, procedures, and introduction to programs
- In-person or virtual trainings on the following topics: Introduction to Environmental Justice, Introduction to Water Justice, Overview & Best Practices for Community Science Organizing, Local Water Governance and Public Health, Intro to Facilitating Meetings
- Weekly Meetings to evaluate progress, check-in, and provide mentorship
- Water and air quality testing - shadowing

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to….
- Understand and implement OCEJ’s community science model for community organizing
- Understand water governance structures in Orange County and the relationship between policy and public health outcomes
- Know how to collect, interpret, and communicate water contamination results from residential and public sites
