Job Description: Nonprofit Internship
Position Title: Intern
Location: Remote (with monthly in-person meetings and events in the city of Paramount, CA)
Time Commitment: 120 hours total (flexible schedule, approximately 10-15 hours per week)
Reports To: Rosalva (Rosie) Salazar, Vice President, and Berenice Castro, Director of Special Programs and Wellness

We focus on creating meaningful change by addressing health disparities and fostering leadership among underserved populations.
Position Overview
This internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, including community outreach, health promotion, social media management, fundraising, grant research, and program evaluation. Interns will develop professional skills while making a meaningful impact on the communities we serve. Most tasks will be completed remotely, with monthly in-person meetings and community events providing additional collaborative opportunities.
Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach
- Plan and execute outreach initiatives to engage underserved populations.
- Develop materials such as flyers, brochures, and presentations for outreach events.
- Represent the organization at in-person and virtual community events.

Social Media Management
- Create and manage content for social media platforms to promote the organization’s mission and programs.
- Develop a content calendar and track engagement metrics.
- Respond to audience comments and messages to foster community interaction.

Fundraising & Grant Research
- Assist in planning and executing fundraising events and campaigns.
- Research local, state, and national grant opportunities and draft application outlines.
- Develop donor engagement materials and strategies.

Health Promotion Activities
- Support the planning and facilitation of wellness workshops.
- Research and create culturally relevant health promotion materials.
- Collaborate on educational campaigns addressing community health disparities.

Program Evaluation
- Develop evaluation tools such as surveys and questionnaires to assess program impact.
- Collect and analyze data to provide actionable recommendations.
- Present findings to leadership for program improvement.

Administrative Support
- Attend weekly or biweekly virtual team meetings and monthly in-person meetings.
- Assist with organizing event logistics, documenting processes, and maintaining records.
Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a college or university (undergraduate or graduate level preferred)
- Interest in nonprofit management, public health, community outreach, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with social media platforms and basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote setting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar tools
- Passion for empowering women, civic engagement, and community health

Training:
1. General Orientation (Mandatory):
An initial orientation will introduce students to the nonprofit's mission, vision, values, and key programs.
Overview of organizational policies, expectations, and resources.
Introduction to the communities served and their specific needs.
2. Weekly or Biweekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings
Scheduled weekly meetings with the supervisor to review progress, address challenges, and provide feedback.
Opportunities to reflect on learning experiences and discuss professional development goals.
3. Task Overview and Contextualization
Comprehensive walkthroughs of assigned tasks, including the significance of each project within the larger organizational mission.
Training on aligning outreach, health promotion, and social media activities with organizational goals.
4. Workshops and Skills Training
Training sessions on creating social media campaigns, grant research and writing, and fundraising strategies.
Skill-building workshops on community engagement, program evaluation, and wellness workshop facilitation.
5. Job Shadowing and Hands-On Experience
Shadowing staff or volunteers during community outreach events, wellness workshops, and meetings with stakeholders.
Hands-on involvement in planning and executing real-world projects and campaigns.
6. Training Literature and Resources
Access to literature and guides on grant writing, social media best practices, health promotion strategies, and program evaluation.
Assigned readings and case studies tailored to nonprofit work and community health.
7. Practical Tools and Testing
Training on using tools for social media analytics, grant application platforms, and evaluation data collection.
Opportunities to test skills through mock scenarios or small-scale pilot projects before full implementation.
Learning outcome:
1. Develop Community Outreach Skills
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to design and implement effective community outreach strategies that engage underserved populations and promote the organization’s mission.
2. Create and Manage Health Promotion Initiatives
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to plan, execute, and evaluate health promotion activities, including wellness workshops and educational campaigns tailored to diverse populations.
3. Demonstrate Fundraising and Grant Research Proficiency
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to identify funding opportunities, draft grant proposals, and contribute to successful fundraising initiatives to support nonprofit operations.
4. Utilize Social Media for Advocacy and Engagement
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to develop and implement a social media strategy that increases community engagement, raises awareness of the nonprofit’s programs, and supports fundraising goals.
5. Design Evaluation Tools for Program Assessment
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to create and apply evaluation tools (e.g., surveys, questionnaires) to assess the effectiveness of workshops and initiatives, using data to make evidence-based recommendations for improvement.
