The Afterschool Teacher executes the daily curriculum and insures the safety and nurture of the children in their care. Works to provide direction for children and implements program curriculum. Additionally provides a quality experience for children and parents. Focus on building achievement and relationships among youth and families.
Tasks:
The student will be responsible for creating and implementing age-appropriate curriculum and activities for transitional kindergarteners ages 4–5 in an afterschool childcare setting, with a focus on core social-emotional learning (SEL) skills suitable for that developmental stage. The student will supervise between 14 to 28 students at a 1:14 ratio in accordance with Title 22 California State Licensing policies and procedures, ensuring the safety, well-being, and nurturing care of all children at all times. The student will work collaboratively with fellow afterschool teachers to deliver a consistent and quality program experience, while also communicating effectively with the team and leadership to address any safety concerns, behavioral challenges, or student needs as they arise.
Training:
The student will participate in monthly staff meetings to collaborate with the team, receive hands-on coaching from leadership on strategies for developing and implementing curriculum, supervising children, and engaging with families. The student will also build foundational professional skills by following the job duties and responsibilities outlined in the employee handbook and orientation, ensuring they are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to provide a quality experience for both children and their families. Additionally, the student will complete the following required trainings and certifications: Mandated Reporter, CPR and First Aid, Pesticide Management, and Concussion Awareness.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to plan and execute age-appropriate curriculum activities that promote academic enrichment while meeting the diverse learning needs of the children in their care. The student will demonstrate effective supervision strategies that ensure the physical and emotional safety of all children, fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports their overall well-being. Additionally, the student will establish and maintain positive relationships with both children and their families, utilizing strong communication skills that promote trust, engagement, and a sense of community within the program.
