Tasks:
During the internship, the student will perform a range of professional and pre-professional duties within the preschool classroom. These duties will include assisting in the planning and implementation of age-appropriate lessons and activities that support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
The student will actively engage with children through guided instruction, small group facilitation, and one-on-one support, using developmentally appropriate practices and positive behavior guidance strategies. They will contribute to classroom management by helping establish routines, transitions, and a structured learning environment.
The student will conduct regular observations of children’s behavior and development, documenting findings and assisting in the assessment process using appropriate early childhood education frameworks. They will also reflect on these observations to adapt interactions and support individual learning needs.
Additional responsibilities include collaborating with supervising teachers to prepare materials, participating in team discussions, and incorporating feedback to improve teaching practices. The student may also assist in communicating professionally with staff and, when appropriate, support family engagement activities.
These duties are designed to ensure that the majority of the student’s experience involves meaningful, skill-based work that aligns with professional standards in early childhood education.
Training:
Students will receive a comprehensive training experience designed to support their development in early childhood education. Training will begin with a mandatory general orientation, including an overview of workplace policies, safety procedures, and expectations within the preschool environment.
Throughout the placement, students will participate in job shadowing with experienced preschool teachers to observe classroom management techniques, lesson planning, and child engagement strategies. Regular one-on-one meetings with a supervising mentor will be conducted to provide feedback, discuss progress, and set ongoing learning goals.
Students will receive guided instruction on implementing age-appropriate activities, positive behavior guidance, and effective communication with young children. Training will also include exposure to lesson plans, classroom materials, and developmental assessment tools used in early childhood education.
Additionally, students will engage in reflective practice through observation, documentation, and discussion of children’s development, allowing them to connect theory from coursework to real-world application.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
1. Plan and implement age-appropriate learning activities that support preschool children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
2. Demonstrate effective classroom management strategies, including guiding behavior using positive reinforcement and clear communication.
3. Build supportive and responsive relationships with young children to foster a safe and engaging learning environment.
4. Collaborate professionally with supervising teachers and staff, incorporating feedback to improve teaching practices.
5. Observe and document children’s developmental progress using appropriate early childhood education frameworks.
