TUSD/YMCA Expanded Learning Afterschool Program InternshipAt — YMCA of Orange County

The YMCA of Orange County offers the Expanded Learning Program (ExL), a partnership with the Tustin Unified School District, providing free afterschool care for qualifying students. The program is designed to support children's learning and growth from kindergarten through 8th grade. The ExL program includes educational activities, homework assistance, and nutritious snacks to ensure students are well-prepared for their academic journey.

Interns are teamed up with one of our instructors to help supervise a group of students and support daily activities. This includes assisting with activity preparation, facilitating group games outdoors, and engaging with students both inside and outside throughout the program. Our program serves students from TK through 6th grade, and our team oversees and supports them during program hours to ensure a safe, engaging, and positive environment.

Task:

Work in classroom settings, assist students with homework and enrichment activities, opportunities for lesson planning, assist with the supervision of students, engagement with students both inside and outside, and support in daily activities.

Training:

The training will include a general employer orientation (mandatory), job shadowing, and an overview/contextualization of assigned tasks.

Learning Outcome:

The student will learn to collaborate and identify dangerous/crisis situations. The student will learn critical thinking skills.
The student will learn to take initiative and be self-motivated.
The student will learn to be reliable and learn public speaking skills, as well as be assertive.
The student will learn to work with agency policies and procedures.
The student will learn organizational skills and conflict resolution skills.
