Academic Success Program Tutor (Fall 2026)At — CSUF - Center for Healthy Neighborhoods
CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods is a nonprofit in North Orange County serving low-income children and families in Fullerton. Its mission is to work with residents and partners to reduce education and health disparities, strengthen neighborhoods, and break cycles of poverty.
The Academic Success Program Tutor supports K–12 students by providing academic help and connecting them to resources. Under the Program Coordinator, interns learn how to identify student needs, maintain updated student reports, and participate in community outreach to better understand the community.
Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, Student Intern(s) will:

Identify educational resources that meet each tutee’s academic needs.

Build and maintain effective relationships with the tutee and their parent or legal guardian.

Stay mentee-focused by supporting each tutee’s specific learning and personal goals.

Collaborate with other interns to provide consistent support.

Monitor and document each tutee’s progress throughout the program.

Participate in community events to better understand local needs.

Develop and lead a weekly program in art, science, math, or reading.

Use and assist tutees with grade-appropriate electronic learning resources.
Student intern(s) may also complete additional assigned tasks. Occasional weekend hours may be available for special events. Interns must be motivated, patient, and willing to work with children.
Alongside the coordinator, literacy specialist, and staff, student intern(s) will:
- Work directly with underserved and vulnerable Spanish-speaking populations.
- Provide one-on-one support to students in areas of academic difficulty.
- Communicate progress to parents/guardians after each tutoring session.
- Collaborate with other tutors and interns to support student learning.
- Represent the Center and the University professionally at all times.
Student intern(s) may occasionally be assigned additional tasks. Some weekend hours may be available for special events. Interns must be motivated, patient, and willing to work with children.
Tasks:
Student Intern(s) will:
1. Work directly with the underserved and vulnerable monolingual Spanish
population
Work one-on-one with students to provide additional guidance on areas of difficulty
2. Interact with parents/guardians to provide progress updates at the end of each tutoring session
3. Collaborate with other tutors/interns to help facilitate the learning process of students
4. Develop and facilitate educational and enrichment activities and/or events, such as health promotion program, fieldtrips to a college campus, and/or family events
5. Represent the Center and the University in a respectful and professional manner
On occasions, student intern(s) may also work on other assigned tasks not specifically listed above. Some weekends opportunities for hours will be available for special events. Student Intern(s) interested in the position must be motivated, have patience, and be willing to work with children.
Training:
Training begins during the first few weeks of the semester. All interns will receive instruction on Center policies and procedures, best practices for tutoring children and youth, and resilience and self-regulation strategies.

3. Effective communication with children and families
4. Proper note-taking techniques
We provide our interns with weekly supervision meetings, where they meet with their supervisor to discuss their progress.
These meetings are run by Mr. Sergio Calderón, their supervisor, and Professor Carla Salcido from the CSUF Hazel Miller Croy Reading Center.
These sessions also serve as a check-in to see how they are doing in the internship, as well as an opportunity to share feedback, suggestions, or any concerns they may have. We share tips, strategies, and other information that will help them with the internship as well. We also invite guest speakers from professions that the interns expressed interest in.
Interns also have the opportunity to schedule one-on-one meetings with their supervisor for more personalized guidance and support.

4. Apply educational and learning concepts to support both tutees and their parents.
