Tasks:
Student interns will engage in a range of professional and pre-professional duties within the preschool classroom to support their development in early childhood education:
Assist in planning and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and activities aligned with curriculum goals.
Observe, document, and assess children’s developmental progress using informal assessment tools and anecdotal records.
Support classroom management by applying positive guidance and behavior support strategies.
Facilitate small group activities to promote language, social-emotional, and cognitive development.
Collaborate with lead teachers to prepare instructional materials and adapt activities to meet diverse learning needs.
Participate in maintaining a safe, organized, and engaging learning environment in accordance with licensing regulations.

Assist with classroom routines (arrival, transitions, meals, and dismissal) while promoting independence and self-help skills in children.
Review and utilize curriculum resources, lesson plans, and child development materials to inform practice.
Reflect on teaching practices and participate in feedback discussions with supervising teachers to support continuous improvement.
These duties are designed to ensure that the majority of the intern’s experience is focused on meaningful, skill-based, and professional responsibilities that align with college-level learning outcomes in early childhood education.
Training:
Students will participate in a structured training experience designed to support their learning outcomes in an early childhood education setting. At the start of the placement, interns will receive a general orientation, including an overview of the preschool program, daily schedules, staff roles, health and safety procedures, and expectations for professionalism and confidentiality.
Throughout the internship, students will engage in job shadowing and guided practice with experienced teachers to observe effective classroom management, instructional strategies, and child interactions. Interns will receive ongoing mentorship, including regular check-ins with a supervising teacher to review progress, provide feedback, and set goals.
Students will also be provided with hands-on training opportunities, such as assisting with lesson implementation, supporting classroom routines, and practicing positive guidance techniques. Additional learning will be supported through access to sample lesson plans, classroom materials, and relevant early childhood education resources.
Reflection is an essential component of the training; interns will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences, ask questions, and apply feedback to improve their practice.
