Opportunity Summary 

The construction management intern will work within of the Jacobs construction management team on an active major transportation project in Southern California and also rotate through other related on-going construction projects within our company to get involved and exposed to Materials Quality Control and Assurance, Document Control, Project Control, Project Site Engineer, Design and Design changes, change order and potential claims management, project site safety, and environmental requirements compliance to name a few. The candidate will also get exposure to alternative design options and value engineering, project challenges and alternatives, cost savings, and outreach approaches to the stakeholders and elected officials nearby the projects. 

The candidate will get guidance through and hone skills in meeting project requirements regarding the project timeline and budget with full collaboration on the development of project schedule and details on the critical activities and managing the time impact analysis and help drive the project to successful delivery.   

Tasks:

The student will get a list of daily, weekly, and monthly tasks that every construction manager needs to complete. The tasks are all at the pre-professional or professional level. They include a complete circle of field activities from Materials testing records, work performance by the contractor, project documents and filling them, processing payments. Each construction project requires the construction manager to set up a 63 project file categories which are in compliance with FHWA and the State of California, for project records and future audits. This also includes how to process a request for a change order and the payment process. Project site safety is another major item on any construction project, and the student will get full exposure and given tasks as how to perform a safety review of the site after getting the injury and health safety requirements. The student will be provided full Personal Protective Safety Equipment for all the activities that includes head, eye, ear, and foot protection while visiting the sites accompany by an experienced construction manager in charge of the project.

Training:

The student will be reporting to the Project Construction Manager who will have 20 years plus in the industry managing major construction sites.

The student will go through the Jacobs Mandatory required training for working on any active construction projects. Once the training is completed successfully, the student will accompany the project manager from Jacobs at the site and observe the activities including project progress meetings, critical path method construction schedule updates, identifying any issues and challenges in the field. The student will also get a lot of exposures to the project documents, the latest State of California and Federal Highway Administration project files and documents.

Learning Outcome

The student will have a clear understanding of the critical thinking process and elements of the crucial project items that will help a successful construction project delivery. This includes managing project budget, schedule, staying with the scope of the project and wide variety of different communication skills with the project team as well as the stakeholders involved with the project.
