Human Services Community Mentor InternAt — Community Linc
The Human Services Community Mentor Intern will support homeless families in achieving long-term self-sufficiency through mentorship, resource coordination, and program support. This role is primarily professional and paraprofessional in nature, offering hands-on experience in case management, trauma-informed care, and community engagement within a nonprofit human services setting.
Interns will work directly with staff and participants to foster stability, empowerment, and personal growth while gaining practical experience aligned with careers in social work, counseling, nonprofit leadership, and human services.
Tasks:
- Assist staff in mentoring program participants (individuals and families) through goal-setting and accountability planning.
- Support Case Managers in developing individualized service plans.
- Conduct check-ins with participants to monitor progress towards housing stability.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate Life Skills workshops (eg, budgeting, parenting, job readiness, dimensions of wellness).
- Provide resource navigation support (housing, healthcare, childcare, employment services).
- Practice trauma-informed and strengths-based communication with clients.
- Assist in planning and coordinating community-building activities and workshops.
- Participate in outreach initiatives and partnership-building efforts.
- Contribute to program evaluation by gathering participant feedback and tracking outcomes.
- Support the development of materials for workshops and support groups.
- Attend case review meetings and interdisciplinary team discussions.
- Observe and contribute to program strategy conversations.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of client interactions (non-clinical notes).

Interns will receive structured training and ongoing support to ensure professional development and achievement of learning outcomes.
Training Components
• Site Orientation: Overview of mission, programs, emergency procedures, confidentiality policies, and trauma-informed care principles
• Job Shadowing: Observation of case managers, mentors, and program staff
• Weekly Supervision Meetings: One-on-one mentorship with assigned supervisor
• Skills Training: Workshops on communication, crisis response, cultural competency, and case management fundamentals
• Assigned Readings/Resources: Human services best practices and program manuals
• Progress Reviews: Midterm and final evaluations with constructive feedback
• Simulations/Role-Playing: Practice client interactions and problem-solving scenarios
Supervisors will use coaching, modeling, guided reflection, and feedback sessions to help interns integrate theory with practice.
