Communications and Community Engagement InternAt — Pasadena Conservatory of Music
The Community Engagement and Communications Intern will support community initiatives and events while gaining hands-on experience in marketing, fundraising, and event planning. Additionally, the intern will play a key role in alumni engagement efforts, helping to build and maintain connections with PCM’s growing alumni network. This position will work approximately 30 hours per week and is an in-person internship from June through September, offering a unique opportunity to connect students, families, and the broader community through music.
Tasks:
Primary duties and responsibilities will include:
Marketing & Communications
– Create blog content that highlights PCM’s students, faculty, alumni, and program through interviews and storytelling.
– Assist with social media calendar management, including content planning, scheduling, and engagement tracking
– Contribute to video production and social media campaigns (short-form videos, graphics, posts)
– Draft newsletters, and email communications (e.g., PLAY ON, courses catalog updates)
– Research and compile data on graduating seniors and alumni achievements to highlight PCM’s impact
Fundraising & Database Management
– Update and maintain donor records in Raiser’s Edge NXT based on monthly enrollment
– Support alumni engagement by helping manage PCM’s alumni database (Raiser’s Edge and Airtable)
Events & Community Engagement
– Contribute to the planning and execution of events such as Open House, Alumni Recital, and Musical Interludes
– Create RSVP forms, promotional materials, giveaways, and attendee reports that inspire audience engagement
– Assist with event-related website updates and email communications
– Coordinate on-site activities, including alumni performances and community interactions
– Build community relationships and visibility by representing PCM at community events (e.g., Vroman’s Summer Concert Series)
– Assist with evaluation and reporting for outreach programs (e.g., YM at Longfellow), as well as partnerships
Training:
- General employer orientation (mandatory)
- Weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings
- Workshops/skills training
- Provision of work samples
- Overview/contextualization of assigned tasks
Learning Outcomes:
Through this internship, the student will:
– Explore how marketing, communications, and development strategies strengthen community connection within a music education organization.
– Gain hands-on experience using storytelling to promote audience engagement through multiplatform content creation, highlighting the impact of students, faculty, and alumni in a creative community.
– Understand how events and engagement activities foster audience participation and deepen access to the arts.
– Develop practical skills in donor and alumni data management and the role of stewardship in fundraising.
– Strengthen collaboration, communication, and project management skills by working across multiple departments and with diverse stakeholders.
