Data Analyst InternAt — Apex Class Action

Opportunity Summary

• Standardize Settlement Data: Leverage advanced Excel (including VBA) and script-based techniques to query, transform, and standardize data from various corporate systems, systematically identifying and resolving discrepancies to ensure initial data accuracy. Regularly propose and test new solutions or tools to further improve data extraction and quality.

• Consolidate Multiple Inputs: Merge different case-related data sources and formats into a master file, restructuring large or unstructured datasets into a coherent arrangement of columns and rows for easy interpretation. Ensure these consolidated datasets meet the requirements of the settlement agreements—enabling accurate settlement award calculations and tax assessments while supporting the mail team in executing efficient, successful mailings.

• Validate Information: Cross-check critical identifiers (e.g., Social Security numbers or Class Member addresses) with authoritative databases (e.g., NCOA search and skip tracing) and review case requirement specifications to identify and resolve any gaps or inconsistencies.

• Cleanse and Refine Datasets: Identify duplicate or invalid entries, correct formatting issues, and address column misalignments to ensure accurate data for the entirety of the settlement administration processes.

• Migrate Datasets to Internal Systems: Upload case datasets to the case management system using Power Automate and collaborate with our Director of Product Engineering to expand and enhance database functionalities.

• Collaborate and Communicate Cross-Functionally: Interact professionally with internal teams, project managers, clients, and external stakeholders, delivering regular updates on progress, issues, and data requirements.

• Track Project Metrics: Log time spent on case-specific tasks to measure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other performance metrics, ensuring transparency and enabling precise reporting.

• Uphold Professional Standards: Must be able to meet short deadlines, coordinate with team members to resolve data challenges proactively, and maintain a solutions-focused work ethic.

• Maintain SOC 2 Compliance: Ensure all data processes meet internal SOC 2-related policies, assist with data classification reviews, and contribute to organization-wide risk assessment reports to uphold stringent security policies.

• Drive Continuous Improvement: Continuously evaluate and adopt the most effective tools and methodologies to optimize data handling processes, while proposing innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and overall quality.

• Alteryx: Create and maintain Alteryx workflows that standardize settlement data, automate complex calculations, and ensure accurate, repeatable processing across class action administration projects

Tasks:

The student will perform professional-level data analysis and project support activities related to class action settlement administration under the guidance of experienced team members.

Duties will include:

- Extracting, reviewing, cleaning, and standardizing settlement data from multiple sources using Excel, Alteryx, and other data processing tools.
- Consolidating large and complex datasets into structured formats that support settlement calculations, tax reporting, and class member communications.
- Performing data validation and quality assurance by identifying discrepancies, duplicate records, formatting issues, and missing information, and resolving them in accordance with case requirements.
- Cross-referencing data with external databases and internal systems to verify class member information and improve data accuracy.
- Assisting with the migration and maintenance of case data within the company's case management systems using automation tools such as Power Automate.
- Creating, testing, and maintaining automated workflows that improve the efficiency, consistency, and accuracy of settlement data processing.
- Collaborating with Project Managers, Product Engineering, and Operations teams to understand project requirements, resolve data-related issues, and support timely project execution.
- Documenting processes, tracking project metrics, and maintaining accurate records of work performed in accordance with company procedures.
- Following established data security, confidentiality, and SOC 2 compliance requirements while handling sensitive information.
- Participating in team meetings, receiving regular feedback, and contributing ideas for process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and data quality.

These responsibilities are professional in nature and require analytical thinking, technical proficiency, problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication. The student will progressively assume greater responsibility as they demonstrate competency, allowing them to apply academic knowledge in a real-world business environment.

Training:

The student will receive a structured onboarding and training program designed to support the achievement of the internship learning outcomes. Training will begin with a general orientation covering the company, the class action administration industry, organizational policies, workplace expectations, and data security requirements, including SOC 2 compliance.

Throughout the internship, the student will participate in job shadowing with experienced team members to observe workflows and best practices before independently completing assigned tasks. Each new assignment will include an overview of its purpose, context within the settlement administration process, expected deliverables, and applicable quality standards.

The student will receive hands-on training in the tools and systems used by the organization, including Excel, Alteryx, Power Automate, and internal case management systems, as applicable. Work samples, standard operating procedures, and reference materials will be provided to reinforce learning. Regular one-on-one meetings with the internship supervisor will be held to review progress, provide feedback, answer questions, and identify opportunities for continued professional development. This combination of orientation, guided practice, mentorship, and ongoing feedback will ensure the student develops both the technical and professional skills required for success.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:

- Apply advanced data management techniques to extract, clean, standardize, and validate large settlement datasets using Excel, Alteryx, Power Automate, and other automation tools while ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
- Integrate and prepare complex datasets from multiple sources into structured, settlement-ready files that support accurate award calculations, tax reporting, and successful class member communications.
- Utilize data validation and quality assurance processes to identify, investigate, and resolve inconsistencies by cross-referencing information with authoritative databases and case-specific requirements.
- Collaborate effectively in a cross-functional professional environment by communicating project updates, coordinating with technical and operational teams, and contributing to the successful execution of class action administration projects.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical data management practices by adhering to SOC 2 security standards, meeting project deadlines, tracking performance metrics, and contributing to continuous process improvement through automation and innovative solutions.
