Opportunity Summary 

The Communications & Public Information Office Intern supports the Arcadia Unified School District Communications Office with day-to-day projects that help tell the District’s story and keep students, staff, families, and the community informed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with general Communications Office projects and administrative tasks.
  • Support the creation and organization of content for District websites, social media, newsletters, and other communications.
  • Help organize photos, videos, digital files, and communications materials.
  • Assist with event preparation, coverage, and follow-up as needed.
  • Support basic website updates and content review.
  • Help develop and prepare materials for District campaigns, initiatives, and special projects.
  • Conduct research and gather information for communications projects.
  • Assist with maintaining organized project trackers, calendars, and files.
  • Provide additional support to the Chief Communications Officer and Communications Office as assigned.

Tasks:

Develop and draft content for District social media, websites, newsletters, and other communication platforms.
Assist with strategic communications projects and campaigns, including researching, planning, developing, and organizing content for specific audiences.
Create and edit multimedia content, including photography, video, graphics, and digital storytelling materials.
Support District and school event communications through planning, on-site coverage, photography, content development, and post-event storytelling.
Assist with website content management, including reviewing pages for accuracy, accessibility, consistency, branding, and overall user experience.
Research communications trends, best practices, audience engagement strategies, and other topics to inform District communication efforts.
Participate in communications planning meetings and contribute ideas and recommendations for upcoming projects and initiatives.
Manage assigned communications projects from initial concept through completion, including tracking deadlines, coordinating necessary information, incorporating feedback, and delivering final products.
Review analytics and other available performance data to evaluate the effectiveness of digital communications and identify opportunities for improvement.
Observe and assist with professional communications functions such as media relations, community engagement, executive communications, and crisis communications, as appropriate.
Maintain organized digital assets, project files, editorial calendars, and communications resources necessary to support ongoing professional projects.
Present completed work and project updates to the Chief Communications Officer, receive professional feedback, and revise work accordingly.

Training:

Students will receive an initial orientation to the Arcadia Unified School District and Communications Office, including an overview of office procedures, expectations, professional standards, confidentiality, and District communication practices. Throughout the internship, students will receive direct mentorship and regular check-ins with the Chief Communications Officer, along with hands-on training in areas such as social media, website content, photography, writing, branding, and digital communications. Assigned projects will include context and examples of previous work, with opportunities for feedback and revision. Students will also have opportunities to job shadow, participate in meetings and events when appropriate, and gradually take on more independent responsibilities as their skills develop.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to create clear, engaging, and audience-appropriate content for district communications, including social media, websites, newsletters, and other digital platforms.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to apply basic principles of strategic communications, branding, and storytelling to support a public school district’s communication goals.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to manage assigned projects and responsibilities by meeting deadlines, staying organized, communicating progress, and consistently following through on commitments.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to demonstrate professional workplace skills, including effective communication, collaboration, initiative, adaptability, and appropriate handling of information in a school district environment.
