Opportunity Summary

Modality: Hybrid — work will be conducted from home, at UCI, and at various community locations throughout Orange County

Compensation: Unpaid — academic credit only

Duration: Ongoing cohort-based internship, up to 120 hours per semester 

Position Overview
The I-CLEAN Study Public Health Intern will support an ongoing longitudinal research study focused on environmental health in Orange County communities. This internship offers hands-on experience in community engagement, human subjects research, and public health data management — ideal for Public Health or related majors interested in research, community health, or clinical research careers.

Responsibilities

  • Table and recruit at local community events to raise awareness of the study
  • Support data collection with study participants, including administering assent/consent and collecting research biosamples
  • Call interested families to explain the study's environmental health focus and screen for interest and eligibility
  • Enter and manage participant and study data in online research databases
  • Contact enrolled participants for study follow-up and continued engagement

Tasks:

• The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by
• Tabling and recruiting at local community events.
• Conducting data collection with participants, including assent/consent procedures and collection of research biosamples.
• Calling interested families to explain the study's environmental health focus and to screen for interest and eligibility.
• Managing and organizing study data in research databases to support data quality and analysis.

Training:

• To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will:
• Require completion of CITI certification training before any participant contact or data interaction.
• Provide recorded training videos covering study protocols, data collection procedures, and database use.
• Connect the intern with peer team members for hands-on guidance and mentorship.
• Hold regular check-ins to review progress, answer questions, and provide feedback.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, students will be able to:
Share information about environmental health issues with community members and study participants
Collect data for an ongoing longitudinal research study
Contact and communicate with participants for study enrollment and follow-up
Use research databases for data analysis and data management
