The Patient Access Representative Academic Intern will gain hands-on experience in healthcare administration and patient access within a dental healthcare setting. The student will work closely with the office team to develop professional skills in patient communication, appointment coordination, insurance verification, healthcare documentation, and administrative operations. The internship will provide exposure to the daily workflow of a dental practice while emphasizing professionalism, confidentiality, communication, organization, and patient-centered service.
- Assist with patient appointment scheduling, confirmations, rescheduling, and appointment coordination.
-Assist with patient registration and review patient demographic and insurance information for accuracy.
-Learn and assist with dental insurance benefit verification and interpretation of eligibility, coverage, limitations, waiting periods, and frequency provisions.
-Communicate professionally with patients regarding appointments, treatment coordination, office procedures, and general administrative questions.
-Assist with organizing and maintaining patient documentation while following HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.
-Gain experience with healthcare practice management systems and electronic patient records.
-Assist with treatment coordination and communication between patients, administrative staff, and clinical team members.
-Assist with processing and following up on insurance-related documentation and administrative information.
-Observe and learn how patient access and administrative workflows support the delivery of dental healthcare.
-Identify and resolve routine scheduling, insurance, and administrative issues under appropriate supervision.
-Participate in staff communication and office workflow activities to develop professional teamwork and organizational skills.
-Apply professional standards of communication, confidentiality, organization, and patient-centered service throughout the internship.
Training:
The student will receive an initial orientation covering office policies, workplace expectations, patient privacy and confidentiality, HIPAA requirements, emergency procedures, and the workflow of the dental practice. The student will receive hands-on training in appointment scheduling, patient registration, insurance verification, patient communication, documentation, and treatment coordination. The supervisor and office team will provide ongoing guidance and feedback as the student progresses. The student will have regular check-ins with the supervisor to review responsibilities, discuss questions, evaluate progress toward learning outcomes, and provide mentorship. Additional training will be provided as the student takes on new responsibilities and develops greater independence in completing assigned tasks.
