Opportunity Summary

Work alongside associates, vice presidents, and the director of research on the production of client and internal deliverables such as manager diligence notes, asset class research, investment manager searches, and portfolio construction. The Intern will work alongside research professionals and participate in the research and due diligence of investment strategies that are a key component of our clients’ success.

Client and Committee Materials
Help prepare the materials behind the firm's investment recommendations, including manager profiles, roundtable exhibits, and asset class summaries
See how research output turns into client deliverables such as asset allocation work, portfolio construction, and performance reporting, and contribute to those materials firsthand
Support reporting that goes to institutional clients including endowments, foundations, family offices, healthcare organizations, and independent schools

Industry Exposure and Relationship Building
Interact with investment professionals from outside asset management firms during manager meetings, seeing how a registered investment advisor evaluates and questions the managers it recommends
Observe the working relationships between the advisory firm, its institutional clients, and the money managers involved, including how fees, conflicts, and fiduciary obligations are handled
Build a professional network across the research, consulting, and analyst teams through regular working sessions

Investment Manager Research and Due Diligence
Build and update quarterly manager profiles across equity, fixed income, hedge fund, private equity, and private credit strategies using industry standard data aggregators, manager questionnaires, and offering materials
Review private placement memoranda and due diligence questionnaires to pull out fund terms, strategy details, and operating metrics

Training:

The intern begins with a general onboarding orientation covering the firm's history, ownership structure, service lines, client types, and the three-step client process, along with an overview of each department (consultants, consulting associates, investment research, investment analysts, and administrative) and how they work together.

Day-to-day learning happens through direct work alongside analysts and associates, who assign and contextualize tasks, review completed work, and provide feedback. Prior versions of manager profiles, minutes, and spreadsheets are provided as work samples and formatting guides so the intern can see the expected standard before producing their own.

The intern attends the Weekly Investment Roundtable, a standing meeting where research staff present updates across every asset class to consultants and analysts. This provides regular exposure to live investment discussion and to how research is communicated across the firm.
Structured review and mentorship loop.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain how a registered investment advisory firm operates — including how Canterbury's research, consulting, and analyst teams work together, and how the firm moves a client from understanding their needs, to setting an investment policy, to implementing a strategy.

2. Research and profile investment managers across asset classes — building manager profiles for equity, fixed income, hedge fund, and private capital strategies.

3. Evaluate whether an investment manager is worth recommending — developing a sense for what separates a strong strategy from a weak one, and how that judgment gets built through research and team discussion.
