Opportunity Summary 

The Mix Mission Statement:

The vision of The Mix Academy is to build a new woven community that sees, cares and gives.  Our Mission is to provide a safe place to be seen, known, and empowered through learning experiences and community development; to preserve the dignity of everyone by welcoming and embracing each other’s life histories and culture; and to build a more just community, a multicultural and multigenerational family. The Mix Academy hosts programs that support both physical, emotional, and mental health.

\n

This position will take place every Wednesday evening from 5pm-830pm and every other friday from 11:30a to 2:30pm. 

\n

The intern role will include the following activities:

\n

Create a dream and vision board to conduct a qualitative assessment/needs assessment of the participants at the MIX. In person only. 

\n

Assist with registration, set up, tear down, and support for activities weekly. In person only.

\n

Complete training and weekly team check in's on zoom. 

\n

Interview community resource partners

\n

Create games and large group activities for wellness and mental and physical well being.

\n

Create a resources list 

\n

Collect recipes and help develop community cookbook. 

\n

Optional: Attend 40 hour Spanish medical interpretations training on Mondays for 8 hours in November

\n

Optional: Assist with food distribution every other week on Fridays from 1130 to 230 pm

\n

Tasks:

\n

- Provide health education on cardiometabolic health and stress management and potential GED prep and nutrition
- Lead wellness and movement challenges to assist Spanish speaking community members in setting movement and stress management goals
- Assist in providing empowerment groups for trauma survivors in Spanish and English (Optional)
- Create games and educational materials for the youth in the community
- Translate and understand limitations in medical translation for medical visits
- Assist Program Managers with administrative tasks
- Know the HIPAA requirements for storage of records
- Assist with the translation and preparation of a community cookbook on health and wellness
- Leading education weekly at The Mix Academy gatherings on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30pm and Food Love Friday once per month from 1-3:30pm.
- Demonstrating they can measure blood pressure, provide diabetes education, conduct nutrition and BMI assessment, and provide calorie information on fitness activities
- Reviewing recipes for inclusion in community cookbook and creating nutritional value information for the recipes
- Lead interactive health education games once a month at The Mix Academy meetings.
- Provide translation for participant meetings and materials
- Report progress and challenges at a team check-in meeting once a month may be on zoom or in-person.

Training:

\n

To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, we will provide training on cardiometabolic health, qualitative research, blood pressure measurement, nutrition assessment, blood glucose monitoring, emotional wellness, empowerment, medical Spanish (optional) and body mass index assessment. We will also have weekly team supervision meetings to support the students in their work on the program activities and troubleshoot if they are running into concerns.

Learning Outcomes:

\n

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to successfully educate Latine community members on important health and fitness topics, be able to design fun and informational games in English and Spanish to promote both emotional empowerment and physical wellness.
