Classroom Instructional InternAt — Sycamore Academy

The Classroom Instructional Intern will assist the classroom science teacher with daily instructional and classroom responsibilities while gaining valuable hands-on experience working with elementary students. This position is designed for a college student interested in education, teaching, child development, or a related field.

The intern will work closely with the classroom teacher to support student learning, classroom organization, small-group instruction, and student engagement. The intern will have the opportunity to observe effective teaching practices and develop professional skills in an authentic classroom setting.

Tasks:

The student will perform the following professional and pre-professional duties under the supervision of the classroom teacher:

* Assist with planning, preparing, and facilitating age-appropriate instructional activities aligned with 5th-grade learning objectives.
* Support individual students and small groups with reading, writing, mathematics, science, and other academic content.
* Observe and analyze classroom instruction and identify effective teaching strategies, student engagement techniques, and classroom management practices.
* Assist the teacher in implementing differentiated learning activities to support students with varying academic abilities and learning needs.
* Provide guided academic support to students by asking questions, clarifying directions, modeling strategies, and providing constructive feedback.
* Assist in facilitating small-group activities, learning centers, collaborative projects, and other student-centered learning experiences.
* Monitor student engagement and participation during instructional activities and communicate observations to the supervising teacher.
* Assist with educational projects and activities that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and student independence.
* Help develop and prepare instructional resources, learning materials, practice activities, and classroom projects.
* Use classroom technology and educational platforms to support instruction and student learning.
* Assist the teacher in reviewing student work and identifying areas where students may benefit from additional practice or support.
* Participate in discussions with the supervising teacher regarding instructional strategies, student needs, classroom challenges, and potential solutions.
* Practice professional communication and collaboration with the supervising teacher and other school personnel.
* Maintain appropriate student confidentiality and demonstrate professional and ethical conduct when working with students and handling student information.
* Participate in regular reflection and mentoring meetings with the supervising teacher to evaluate experiences, discuss professional growth, and connect classroom experiences to concepts learned through college coursework.
* Gradually assume increased responsibility for appropriate classroom and instructional tasks as skills and confidence develop throughout the internship.

Training:

The student will receive an initial orientation to the classroom, school environment, daily routines, expectations, safety procedures, confidentiality requirements, and professional standards for working with elementary students. The supervising teacher will provide an overview of classroom procedures, instructional routines, curriculum, classroom management strategies, and student learning expectations.

The student will participate in job shadowing and observation of the supervising teacher to learn effective instructional and classroom management practices. The supervising teacher will model appropriate strategies for supporting students, facilitating small-group activities, providing academic assistance, and encouraging positive student behavior.

Throughout the internship, the student will receive ongoing hands-on training and feedback while assisting with classroom activities, instructional materials, small-group instruction, and individual student support. Assigned tasks will be explained and contextualized so the student understands the educational purpose behind each responsibility.

The student will have regular check-ins with the supervising teacher to discuss experiences, ask questions, receive feedback, and reflect on progress toward the learning outcomes. Training and responsibilities will gradually increase as the student demonstrates confidence and proficiency.

The supervising teacher will also provide examples of lesson materials, instructional resources, classroom procedures, and student activities to help the student understand how effective elementary instruction is planned and implemented.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
