Hybrid (Combination of On-Site and Remote) Service Opportunity: Girls Inc. of Orange CountyAt — Girls Inc. of Orange County
College Interns and Volunteers serve as program facilitators and mentors who deliver Girls Inc. curriculum to girls ages 6-18 in Orange County area. STEM and Health Lab description: Help facilitate activities and discussion around topics such as body image and self-esteem, stress and healthy coping mechanisms, alcohol and substance abuse prevention, fitness and nutrition, healthy sexuality and reproductive health programs (aligned with the California Healthy Youth Act), advocacy and community engagement and healthy relationships. Supervise and ensure girls stay motivated throughout the program duration. Engage in ongoing communication with the program staff. Literacy description: Work with program staff to help girls (elementary level) achieve goals academically and lead healthy and physically active lives. Help facilitate reading and activities that help girls develop academic skills and self esteem. Build positive and nurturing relationships with elementary girls as a mentor. Engage in ongoing communication with the program staff.
Learning outcomes of the Internship opportunity:
* Effectively develop intervention methods for improvement and promotion of healthy behaviors and mental health in youth girls.
* Develop communication skills that allow for effectively interacting with specific target population, female youth population of Orange County.
* Understand the program staff implementation of evaluations and assessment of the programs/activities of non-profits such as Girls Inc.
All interns and volunteers must attend a general orientation with the Girls Inc program. In addition, a waiver and background check will be required for any new interns. Aside from the general orientation, interns will receive a 1-1 training with the program staff they are assigned to. This may include a video training video or a virtual meeting to review guidelines/requirements. All interns will also be required to meet with the program staff at least once a week to discuss their progress. In these meetings, the program staff will continue to provide additional training and support.
Due to COVID precautions, all in-person activities will require interns to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and get a temperature check. This may change starting September but the interns will be updated of any changes.
