Alzheimer's San Diego

Organization Description

The mission at Alzheimer’s San Diego is to provide San Diego families with care and support, while advancing critical local research for a cure. Each year, we serve more than 30,000 San Diegans through our free programs and services. These include: education classes; support and discussion groups; social activity programs; family care consultations; early-stage support; and the ALZ Companions Respite Program.

The ALZ Companions Program provides in-home support to family caregivers in the form of social visits with their loved one who has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Interns spend time with individuals who have dementia to provide companionship, socialization and supervision. Interns do not help with any physical or personal care.

Walk4ALZ is our largest fundraising event of the year and we rely on our dedicated and passionate volunteers to make it a success. We have two walks every October: Balboa Park and Oceanside Pier.

  • Provide companionship to the client, including conversing, reading, taking walks and watching movies
  • Work with the caregiver and client to identify appropriate activities that will be enjoyable
  • Stay alert to changes in the condition of the client
  • Ensure safety at all times
  • Pay attention to and follow specific instructions as provided by the primary caregiver, unless inappropriate
  • Have the ability to handle an emergency situation and know when to contact the proper authorities, such as 911 or Alzheimer¹s San Diego staff
  • Submit weekly visit logs in order to document activities or changes in the physical or mental condition of the client or primary caregiver
  • Regularly communicate with Alzheimer¹s San Diego staff
