Organization Description Founded in 2005, our mission is to help our communities equitably implement sustainable and regenerative practices to slow and adapt to climate change. Communities for Sustainable Monterey County (CSMC) is a 100% volunteer, non-profit organization comprised currently of eight Local Action Groups who focus their environmental projects in their respective communities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Marina, Seaside, Salinas, Carmel, Del Rey Oaks, Big Sur and unincorporated Monterey County. Our Local Action Group leaders and volunteers work with partners from city sustainability staff, businesses and like-minded NGOs such as Regen Monterey, Waste Management, Surfrider, Everyone’s Harvest, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Habitat Stewardship Project Monterey Bay (formerly Return of Native Plants), and Blue Zones of Monterey.
Program Information How You Would Help:
You can join efforts that include education outreach, policy advocacy, and projects that effect plastic pollution and food waste reduction, watershed protection, solar power and electrification in housing and transportation, local food gardens and pollinator habitats, and land use that reduces car use, and increases affordable housing and access to non-motorized commuting and recreation. The range of activities is wide. You can choose to engage directly with community members from all age groups in specific projects or work from a computer with data management or manage social media or participate in advocacy at public meetings. Artists, public speakers, political science students, computer geeks, filmmakers, community organizers, social justice workers and gardeners are needed. No matter what your interests or abilities, you can contribute toward creating and building a sustainable society in Monterey County by working with CSMC.
