Family Resource Centers - Salinas City Elementary School District

Organization Description

From our district's beginning with 9 students in a house, we have grown to almost 9000 students and 800 staff members at 14 elementary schools.

MISSION

The Mission of the Salinas City Elementary School District is to provide a well-rounded education with multiple opportunities for all students’ success.

VISION

We expect all children to be at or above grade level.

Program Information

The Salinas City Elementary School District is proud to offer four Family Resource Centers located at Sherwood, Kammann, University Park, and Loma Vista Schools. Our team is dedicated to supporting families by providing valuable resources to ensure children are happy, healthy, and set up for success in school and beyond. Each center offers help with essential needs like food, backpacks, school supplies, hygiene kits, and school uniforms.

The Family Resource Centers are here for every family in our district, offering a range of services such as social-emotional classes, technology assistance, second-language learning, workshops for both parents and students, and guidance through the school system—and so much more. We especially work with homeless and foster families, helping to ensure they have the support they need. On average, over 3,600 students in our district are identified as homeless each year, making up more than 40% of our student body.

For students in need, we provide items like school uniforms or clothing, warm jackets, socks, backpacks, school supplies, hygiene items (such as toothbrushes, soap, and more), books, non-perishable food, blankets, umbrellas, bus passes, shower passes, laundry cards, and anything else that helps make their educational journey smoother.

We also support parents by assisting with important documents like vaccine records, birth certificates, and social security cards to help with school enrollment. Families can also access computers at our centers to search for and apply for jobs. Services and programs vary throughout the year depending on our partnerships with other agencies and organizations, allowing us to offer even more ways to help our families thrive.

Our Family Resource Centers are here for you—together, we can make sure every child is ready to shine!

Interns will experience direct services with homeless families, collaboration with Family Resource Center staff and community partners, analysis of homeless data and many other activities and projects.

trainings/ staff meetings offered or required

Collaborative staff and team meetings are held as needed. Our FRCs are in constant contact with one another via phone, virtual, and in-person meetings. We also collaborate with the FACE team: Family and Community Engagement.

Health & Safety

All service learning students will be required to have a TB test and Fingerprinting prior to starting their service hours.

ADA: The intern should have the ability to lift 25 pounds and be comfortable walking during the day.

The intern is responsible for all costs for district requirements. Our district requires: TB testing, fingerprints, Live Scan, background investigation, etc. The fingerprints, Live Scan and background are all done through the Post Box on Acacia Street right across from the district office in the same parking lot. We have a form that is given to the intern and they take it to the Post Box. They then return the signed form to Cheryl Camany and she is responsible to turn it into the HR department. Results are sent directly to SCESD within a couple of weeks or less. The TB test should be done asap at the place of choice of the intern, prior to the beginning of service. Results are to be turned into Cheryl Camany as well. A cover letter and resume are also required prior to an interview.
