Organization Description

The Monterey County Health Department exists to enhance, protect, and improve the health Monterey County residents and environments. MCHD provides a wide variety of health-related services in the areas of behavioral health, clinic services, emergency management services, environmental health, public guardianship, and public health.

Program Information

Monterey County Health Department’s (MCHD) Administration’s Planning, Evaluation, and Policy (PEP) unit primarily works in three areas: facilitating the implementation of the Health Department Strategic Plan; aligning and monitoring the department’s performance standards with national public health accreditation requirements; and addressing social and environmental policies and practices that contribute to creating more equitable health outcomes.

General Description of what students will be doing at the site:

Data entry, survey implementation, policy-related supports, writing and organizing newsletter and social media inputs

The CHHS student intern(s) will support the county’s community health assessment data collection, input, and website display. These data collection and analyses relate to:
• Population health, health education, safety, equitable access to services, and the social determinants of health,
• Evaluation of program focused on reducing teen dating violence and teen violence in Salinas,
• Survey response data entry for a variety of projects
Other duties may include assisting with data research, creating data spreadsheets, and assisting with data visualizations. The student will work directly with the Evaluation and Whole Person Care Program Specialist.

Desired Intern Characteristics:
Student Intern must have a basic understanding of how to use Microsoft Excel (e.g. creating a spreadsheet, doing simple formulas, creating graphs) and Microsoft PowerPoint (e.g. creating graphs).
