Organization Description

Second Harvest works with the community to end hunger through healthy food, education and leadership. Our vision is a thriving community where everyone has access to nutritious food to support their health and well-being. We reach people in need through our vast network of partner agencies and non-profits and directly through food distribution and nutrition education at dozens of program sites.

Program Information

Students will be able to do an array of tasks such as collecting participant stories, supporting at food distribution sites, calling participants, outreach for calfesh and cal works programs, tabling at events, office work such as data entry, filing.

CHHS Intern opportunities in volunteer appreciation, volunteer recruitment, and volunteer management.

Opportunities are available in Nutrition Programs, CalFresh Outreach, Operations, Development or Finance departments.

 Activities may be in outreach to the low-income Spanish speaking population in Watsonville and providing a nutrition education program for parents at a local elementary school. Other activities may include clerical work, assisting with demographics and with community events. 

Great opportunity for public policy work (legislative and other advocacy at the local state and federal level with Central Coast Hunger Coalition and other groups). Also community-wide collaboration to develop strategies to address the obesity health crisis. While 80,000 people are food-insecure on the central coast, a disproportionate number of low-income families and individuals also face shortened life spans and negative health outcomes dues to obesity, including a near epidemic incidence of diabetes.
