After School Academy - MPUSD

Organization Description

At MPUSD, the Educational Services department is committed to providing services and support to meet the needs of our diverse learners from grades K-12 and beyond. We work together with our school leaders and staff to ensure all of our students have access to a high-quality instructional program and the services needed to succeed as individuals.

Program Information

Service learning students interested in doing their service at any school within MPUSD must attend a MANDATORY Orientation. NO EXCEPTIONS!!

After School Academy (ASA): A free, grant-based program and available for students in transitional kindergarten through 8th grade. Students are invited to the program based on teacher referral for academic or social need. There is no open enrollment. Space is limited.

ASA is available at:

  • Crumpton Elementary
  • Del Rey Woods Elementary
  • Marina Vista Vista Elementary
  • Martin Luther King Elementary
  • Ord Terrace Elementary
  • Los Arboles Middle
  • Seaside Middle

Enrollment is based on the following criteria by invitation only (no open enrollment):

  • Homeless/Foster (State mandated requirement)
  • Teacher Recommendation (Grant requirement based on Academic or Social/Emotional needs)
  • Siblings (Grant plan to keep the family unit together)
  • Prior Enrollment in ASA* (Grant plan to keep consistency for the student and family)
  • Prior good attendance, participation, and behavior in ASA. (ASA is not a childcare or babysitting program.) The grant requires a comprehensive program, including Academic Support, Enrichment Activities, and Nutrition opportunities, and to ensure that spots are filled by students that are benefiting from what is offered. Students are expected to attend everyday they are in school and stay until the end of the program day.
  • Balancing grade level groups (Grant requirement to maintain the student/staff ratio)

Once all spots have been filled by referred students, a waiting list of referred students by grade level will be initiated. Waiting lists do not roll over from one year to the next. NOTE: There is no guarantee that once a student attended the program they will automatically be enrolled in the program for the following year. Special Education students are accepted and an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting may be required prior to enrolling to be sure we are adequately trained to meet the needs of the student.

After School Academy Elementary:  The Elementary After School Academy Program provides 3 components to its participants aligned with the school day pacing guide allowing students to get additional support in areas where needed; while simultaneously offering other students the opportunity to master the core lessons.  Students are offered two enrichment components one specifically designated to succeed socially through teambuilding activities, such as, sports, field trips, and games; the other component offers academic enrichment activities, such as learning measurements and fractions during cooking club, or learning science.

After School Academy Middle School: provides students the three components as elementary, but the programs are offered in a different way.  The Homework Power Hour allows students to complete their homework and get additional assistance as needed.  Students can choose from a variety of clubs being offered simultaneously, which support them both academically and socially.  The clubs include, technology, graphic design, cooking, sewing, and sports.  Students are offered tutoring opportunities by credentialed teachers.
