Organization Description

Mission of the City of Pacific Grove Community Development Department

The Housing Division administers programs that provide affordable housing for low-income households and helps to rehabilitate aging or deteriorating housing stock in the community as grant funding is available. The Code Compliance Program resolves potential municipal code violations by seeking compliance through collaborative means, with enforcement measures used when necessary.

The Community Development Department is organized into five work units: building, advance planning, current planning, housing, and code compliance, which collaborate to achieve the department’s mission.  The Building function administers permit and inspection services for all residential and commercial construction activity in the community to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances and state building codes.  The Advance Planning function involves proactive maintenance of the City’s General Plan, Local Coastal Program, Zoning Ordinance, and other documents that guide the City’s development and that provide a framework for regulation of the built environment.  The Current Planning function processes a variety of planning permits to ensure compliance with the City’s Zoning Ordinance, Historic Preservation Ordinance, and Architectural Design Guidelines. Program Information

Proposed work for a new student intern in Public Administration

Program Evaluation – Help to develop a plan (mitigation monitoring system) to monitor projects with significant biological features; what do we need to do, who should do it, how to do it effectively, what are the legal and ethical ramifications of why we do it.

Budgeting and Finance - Depending on funding sources, student will develop an expense tracking system for multiple funding sources. Student will also help identify potential funding sources for affordable housing development and rent subsidy programs.

Economic Development – Assist in plans to revitalize targeted downtown areas, such as Gardner’s Alley walkway. Help identify resources and negotiate with property owners and businesses owners to buy in to development.

Technology – Assist with social media and website development; help create pamphlets and brochures explaining program activities and services for public education purposes.

The Community Development Department offers a collaborative work environment with seasoned staff, volunteers and other interns who provide ongoing support for a variety of projects and endeavors. Under the direction of Housing Program Manager, Terri Schaeffer and Advance Planning Manager, Anastazia Aziz, a student will have flexibility to take on projects and tasks that inspire and interest him/her.
