Organization Description

The Monterey County Department of Social Services (MCDSS) administers over seventy programs that daily serve an estimated 100,000 residents of Monterey County. Department services include a variety of public assistance programs, employment services, and social services for children and their families, adults with disabilities, seniors, and military veterans. The Department is the designated agency responsible for the investigation of child, dependent adult and elder abuse in Monterey County. The mission of Monterey County Department of Social Services (MCDSS) is to promote the social and economic self-reliance of each individual and family we serve through:

Program Information

The Department's human resources branch is responsible for coordinating activities related to employment with the Department. This includes: recruiting and hiring new talent into the Department, staff training, making sure payroll and benefits are delivered, coordinating employee relations, and overseeing the Department's Civil Rights, safety, worker's com;ensation and ergonomics programs. Our services are provided to nearly 800 employees who help people find work, keep children and adults safe, assist people with disabilities maintain their independence, make sure veteran's are able to access earned benefits, and provide low-income families with health insurance, nutrition assistance, and temporary cash aid.

DSS services to Monterey County residents include comnnunity beneifts, child protection, and services for aging. The CalWorks Employment Services (CWES) provides familis with resources to obtain employmenbt, training, education behaviroal health, substance abuse, and family stabilization resources,

The CHHS interns will work across programs in Human Resources and Staff Development Training. Activities will include policy research, updating of personnel policies, procedures, handbooks in program. Project ideas for Staff Development Traininig include assisting with the development of a mentoring/job shadowing pilot program, creating a Department video to use in New Hire Orientations and creating a visual for DSS Values in Action
