Program Description:

Eden Children’s Services is an outpatient mental health center for Alameda County’s Behavioral Health Care Services.  We are located in the hills of the San Leandro and serve children and families who have suffered severe abuse or neglect.   Staff members use a variety of treatment modalities, including individual, family and group therapy.

Clientele Served: Approximately

1/3 of our clientele is living with  non-parental relatives or in the foster care system, due to severe neglect or abuse  A significant number of  our clients are African American and  Latino/Hispanic.  Sources of referral through the County’s centralized ACCESS system are Child & Family Services (CPS), schools, psychiatric hospitals and family members.

Issues Program Addresses: Loss issues predominate, although they frequently present as acting out or aggressive behavior.  The most prevalent primary diagnoses for our clients are Affective Disorders (depression), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Disruptive Behaviors and Anxiety/PTSD Disorders.

Intern Assignments: Interns carry a caseload of five to seven cases, providing individual and collateral therapy to the families that they serve.  Placement that has a school component is a possibility, substituting for part of the caseload.  They may co-lead a group or be a co-therapist doing family therapy with a staff member.

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities: Didactic seminars on Fridays. Student Consultation Group is on Thursdays mornings.

Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.)
Interns may use a County car for work related travel.  Eligible for MHSA Stipend Program.
Other Special Placement Procedures or Requirements (Including Dates of Internship, Special Application Forms and Deadlines):
Internship is usually from mid September until mid May. A medical examination that the County pays for is needed prior to starting the internship.  Rubella, rubeola and tetanus vaccinations or immunity is needed at intern’s expense.  TB testing is part of the medical examination.
