Program Description:
The School Mental Health program provides a range of mental health services to 4 public elementary and 1 public middle school students and their families, in the Ross Valley area. Interns working in the program will work collaboratively with their assigned schools to provide the services that are needed to support the academic, social and emotional needs of the children, their peers and their family. Interns/Trainees are integrated into existing student services teams at each school site and work with the range of school personnel to ensure coordination of services for the students. Intern/trainees learn client advocacy, case management, biopsychosocial assessment, treatment planning and various therapeutic techniques (i.e. play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, crisis intervention and management...).
Further, interns will learn assist in district wide implementation of the Toolbox Project, a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum. Interns will team up with teachers and school staff to counsel students who need extra support in learning resiliency and how to use their innate problem solving skills. Interns will coordinate and implement 10 week counseling groups as well as provide individual treatment for those students most at risk.
Clientele Served:
The Ross Valley School District is a K-8 school district in Marin County serving 2200 children in the towns of San Anselmo, Ross and Fairfax. The age of the client population ranges from 4-14 yrs old, however interns will be required to interface and work in conjunction with parents/caregivers of all ages. The student population consists of Caucasian, Hispanic, African American, Asian, American Indian/Alaskan and Filipino/Pacific Islander students. Students will range in developmental, intellectual and physical abilities as well as family make up and issues.
Issues Program Addresses:
The mental health program will address issues the mental health and behavior of students. Potential clients will range in developmental, intellectual and physical ability, behavioral and learning concerns, the need for advocacy with respect to obtaining necessary services for the clients and/or the families, the need for psychoeducation of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, substance use/abuse and meeting the psychological, social and emotional needs of the clients.
Intern Assignments:
Interns will be assigned to two school settings covering a primary school and a secondary school. The intern will be integrated into the school environment from the beginning of the school year. They would be an integral part of SST, IEP and multidisciplinary teams who meet to coordinate services for students. They would provide intervention in the classroom, playground and possibly within the home/school relationship. The interns would be trained and expected to hold small therapy groups for students with behavioral and/or social emotional concerns as well as individual sessions with the most at-risk students. Clients will range in age, developmental level, ethnicity and reason for referral. The intern will have the opportunity to map community services and provide referrals to local social service agencies and/or work collaboratively with those agencies to provide services to students and/or parent/caregivers.

Interns would be integrated into the school campus and would be required to attend an orientation session, introduction to staff and back to school night as scheduled by their school placement.
Interns would need to have a finger print (LIVE SCAN) clearance and current TB test prior to the first date of school.
