Program Description:
Volunteer Legal Services Program located at 465 California Street provides free legal aid to low income and disadvantaged people. VLSP uses a holistic approach in working with clients, addressing both the legal issues as well as the underlying social service needs. Homeless Advocacy Project is one of the various VLSP projects and is located South of Market. A student could potentially work out of both offices under the supervision of the Director of Social Services.
Clientele Served:
Homeless or those at imminent risk of homelessness, family law clients-seeking dissolution and/or custody, low-income clients
Issues Program Addresses:
Homelessness, housing issues (i.e., eviction), significant mental health issues, drug/etoh use, abuse and dependence, access to public benefits (most notably, SSI), immigration issues, domestic violence, divorce, unemployment
Intern Assignments:
Process recordings, case presentations, brief therapy, outreach, written documentation/maintaining client records, collaboration with multidisciplinary staff, crises management, participation at the Court House Project-providing support and resources to clients facing imminent eviction and working with their attorneys.
Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
Minimum of one hour of on-site field instruction will be provided. Supervisor will also be available on an as needed basis. Video training. Shadowing of attorneys and social service advocates. Participation in community based meetings if desired.
Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.)
Potential for small stipend. Do not need car. Will reimburse student for train/bus fare when used for work related appointments/meetings. Student will have his/her own work station.
