Program Description:

The De Anza High School Health Center was established in June 2007 as a collaboration effort between the West Contra Costa Unified School District and Bay Area Community Resources. The Health Center collaborates with a number of local service providers to deliver free, accessible, on-site health services available for all De Anza High School students. Basic services include health education information and workshops, mental health individual and group counseling, violence prevention programs, drug and alcohol prevention/youth development programs, and reproductive health medical services including: std screening and treatment, pregnancy testing, reproductive health counseling, and contraceptives. This year, DeAnza will be serving 600 students directly and 1100 will be reached.

We also serve students in foster care or formerly in foster care, victims or witnesses to neighborhood violence, students struggling with mental health and/or AOD issues, and students who may have gang interest or affiliation.

5.  Please indicate any specials skills that you desire in a student, such as fluency in a

     foreign language, sign language, computer literacy, etc.

     Students with computer literacy are preferred. Spanish speaking students are desired.  

 6.  Trainings related to facilitating psycho-educational groups, child abuse reporting, and crisis intervention, working in school, basic mental health assessment, and parent education.

Interns will be responsible for planning and implementing psycho-education groups, mentoring programs, parent classes and outreach.

What attitudes/aptitudes/characteristics do you consider desirable for students placed in your agency?

We are seeking interns who are self-starters, independent but also able to collaborate and plan as part of a mental health team. Interns should be assertive and outgoing, approachable, friendly, and able to work in a fast-paced high school environment. Interns should also have knowledge of or be willing to learn about the needs of at-risk or underserved youth in West Contra Costa Unified Schools.

Interns will help plan and implement various programs and psycho-educational groups for high school students and parents. These programs will address cyber bullying, healthy relationships, violence prevention, LGBTQ issues, AOD prevention and treatment, peer led program such as conflict mediation, peer counseling and peer mentoring.
