Program Description:
Behavioral health services provide individual and family therapy within our community, club-based settings. We also provide life-skills and curriculum-based groups throughout the clubs. The Behavioral Health Specialist also provides small group interventions through education and outreach, addressing the needs of our families and supporting club endeavors to enhance health and life skills of our youth.
Clientele Served:
San Francisco youth 6 – 18 years old, predominantly low income and extremely low income.
43% 6 – 9 years old, 24% 10 – 12 years old, 23% 13 – 15 years old and 10% 16-18 years old.

African-American: 44%

80% of our members’ household income meets “extremely low income” threshold. 14% are low income or very low income. Only 6% of youth served by our agency are above low income. 96% of our club members qualify for the free lunch program. We serve youth in San Francisco regardless of their immigration and documentation status.
Issues Program Addresses:
Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Our programs and committed staff engage youth in positive activities with peer supports that promote self-esteem.
Programs include: Health and Life Skills, Education and Career, Character and Leadership Development, Social and Recreational, and Technology.
Behavioral Health Services provide club-based therapeutic services that support youth around issues of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, positive socialization, healthy relationships, anger management and conflict resolution, family communication and coping and a host of others. We also are integral to the successful integration and inclusion of youth with special needs.
Intern Assignments:
Intern(s) will co-facilitate school or club-based life skills groups, and club-based parent support groups. Intern(s) will maintain an active caseload of up to 5 youth, providing assessment, individual therapy and case management services. Students will also assist with behavioral management and coping within the club setting.
Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
Through partnership with CBOs, intern(s) will participate in intern trainings addressing documentation, assessment, therapeutic interventions and theoretical frameworks in practice. Intern(s) will also participate in training opportunities regarding youth development practices, work with specific populations, developmentally-specific program development and their interface with therapy.

2nd year students are eligible for a moderate stipend upon completion of 8 months. As our Behavioral Health program continues to expand, interns would be eligible for “internal-candidate” consideration for future Behavioral Health positions.

Pre-placement background check required via LiveScan fingerprinting. Pre-placement screening for TB required.
