Program Description:
Unit 23 is a acute locked psychiatric facility where care is provided for persons with acute psychiatric and or substance abuse problems. There is a strong multidisciplinary team approach. SW students are welcome to attend most teachings of the psychiatric residents (MD’s) who are also in training. The student also leads one focus group per week and can co facilitate one group per day when on site.
New duties provided in this internship will be assessing persons admitting to medicine with concomitant mental health and substance abuse problems. This provides a unique blend of medicine dynamics and psychiatry.
Clientele Served:
As above. Ages 18 and up with both acute behavioral health issues and acute medical issues.
Issues Program Addresses:
Improving clinical skills with challenging populations, thorough biopsychsocial assessments, facilitating group therapy, working closely with other disciplines, etc, thorough discharge planning, psychoeducation to clients and families, working with outside providers.
Intern Assignments:
All of the above with close supervision.
Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
All of the above including teachings and trainings with psychiatric resident physicians, psychologists and experienced attending physicians. Students will learn about performing proper assessments, working with persons with a variety of psychiatric diagnosis (including Axis I and II) and substance abuse issues, community resources from a variety of counties in northern California, as well as discharge planning. This will also include assessing for the need for any mandated reporting such as for APS, CPS, domestic violence, and sexual assault. They will also become familiar with DSM criteria for diagnosis, medical terminology, discharge planning and the legal process in relation to the mental health system (i.e., 5150, 5250, temporary conservatorships, etc). They can also participate in capacity hearings on the unit (observe the process).

Weekly psychiatric grand rounds on Tuesdays.
Lunch is usually served on Wednesdays along with a presentation from different psychiatrically focused resources.
