Program Description:
The Redwood City Police Department is an organization of professionals who are dedicated to integrity, customer service, the rights of individuals, and the needs of a constantly changing society. We are a progressive police department which recognizes that by working in a partnership with our community we can best meet our goals of protecting life and property, improving the quality of life, reducing crime and the fear of crime and maintaining a safe community.
The Redwood City Police Department Juvenile Services Internship program offers students with the opportunity to work with Individuals, Families and Groups, and/or practice in the Administration and Planning of our Police Activities League services.
Individuals, Families, and Groups: The intern provides direct services to first time offenders and their families, including but not limited to clinical assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, case management, coordination of educational programs, and liaison with community resources. Interns have also the opportunity to work with “at risk” youth in the areas of gang prevention, early intervention and police diversion.
Police Activities League: PAL provides socio-recreational and alternative services to “at risk” and economically challenged youth. Interns receive intense training in program design, budget implementation, fund raising, design and plan events and campaigns. Some assignments include working on presentations for community, corporate and political groups as well as web site update and design.
Clientele Served:
We provide services to “at risk” youth and their families in the areas of prevention, early intervention, police diversion, and also offer socio recreational activities.
We work with a population that involves children with behavioral and emotional problems, who have parents who in many cases are distrustful of law enforcement and the juvenile justice system.
Issues Program Addresses:
Behavioral problems – Minor crimes – Gang prevention – Truancy abatement– Families in crisis. Work in collaboration with other agencies in the community. Community development.
Intern Assignments:
Assessments, interviewing, individual clinical work, group work, crisis intervention, psycho-social assessments, family interventions, case management, multi-disciplinary collaboration, AND/OR advocacy, administration, community development, program development, program evaluation.
