Program Description:

The Civicorps Academy serves young adults ages 18 to 26 through a combination of on-the-job training in environmental improvement projects and formal classroom instruction working towards a high school diploma. Civicorps is dedicated to promoting youth development through environmental stewardship and community service.  We seek to improve young people’s academic skills and knowledge, increase their sense of civic and environmental responsibility, foster their sense of caring toward others, and build their capacity to improve their own lives and to actively contribute to a democratic way of life. 

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

Education, job training, and career for opportunity youth ages 18-26

Populations and Clientele Served:

 All of our students have dropped out of high school, are low-income, and 99% live in poverty. Almost all (99%) students are an ethnic minority, 50% are formerly incarcerated, 50% are struggling with homelessness, 40% have learning disabilities, 35% are single parents, 24% are former foster youth. They are 18-26 years old.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

High school diploma, paid job training, extensive support services for during and post program

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

1-1 counseling and case management, general program observation, understanding grant compliance, helping to run our clothing and food programs

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

Alternatives to Violence Project training, on-going staff development and supervision, trainings to interest
