Program Description:
NICOS’ Community Connections Program places 20-30 students from City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University (primarily those enrolled in Asian American Studies courses) into internships at Asian American community-based health and human service organizations.

Clientele Served:
College and university students interested in working in Asian American community-based agencies.

Issues Program Addresses:
Issues addressed include: a) the lack of emerging leadership in Asian American communities; b) the shortage of bilingual/ bicultural persons interested in health and human services work as a career; c) the lack of practical opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in theories learned through Asian American Studies and related courses.

Intern Assignments:
Depending upon the student’s skills and abilities, duties may include some or all of the following:
a) recruiting students and internship supervisors for the program
b) monitoring and encouraging student progress in internships
c) facilitating community-based workshops and discussions on students’ internship experiences
d) planning and facilitating community-based workshops and discussions on current Asian American health issues
e) recruiting appropriate community leaders for in-classroom presentations, as requested by university partners
f) developing, administering and analyzing student and supervisor evaluations

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
Training and educational opportunities include:
a) development of program management skills
b) development of leadership skills, including group facilitation, collaboration, and community organizing
c) development of outreach and marketing skills

Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.)
A modest travel and/or cash stipend may apply.  Conference and training fees will be covered, if necessary.

Other Special Placement Procedures or Requirements (Including Dates of Internship, Special Application Forms and Deadlines):
Student must be mature enough to monitor and supervise peers.  Student must be resourceful and diplomatic.
